Scenario imageACUMEN is based on the 64 medical presentations detailed in the Acute Medicine curriculum, which were developed to anticipate the majority of ways patients present themselves to the front door.

These 64 presentations consist of the four major emergency presentations (Cardio Respiratory Arrest, Anaphylaxis, The Unconscious Patient and The Shocked Patient) followed by the "top twenty" and "other important" presentations.

ACUMEN will cover all of these, but there will be an initial focus on the 'top twenty' presentations as the project rolls out;

The Top 20 Common Medical Presentations

  • Blackout/Collapse
  • Breathlessness
  • Falls
  • Acute Back Pain
  • Jaundice
  • Fits/Seizure
  • Vomiting and Nausea
  • Weakness and Paralysis
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Haematemesis and Melaena
  • Confusion, Acute
  • Rash
  • Palpitations
  • Cough
  • Chest Pain
  • Fever
  • Poisoning
  • Limb pain & Swelling
  • Headache

Each presentation will be demonstrated by a number of interactive scenarios that allow trainees to develop and practice their knowledge and skills in managing patients who present acutely.

In addition, each scenario is also supported by a range of short "to-the-point" revision sessions together with more in-depth knowledge sessions that cover the presentations and associated diagnoses and management in greater detail.
