Overview
The Adolescent Health Programme (AHP) is an elearning programme for all healthcare professionals working with young people age (12-18 years).
It is the third programme in the Healthy Child Programme (0-18) series of elearning resources, following the Healthy Child Programme (0-5 years) and Healthy School Child Programme (5-12 years).
This resource is suitable for GPs, school nurses, trainee paediatricians and the child health team as part of blended learning for those in training or wishing to update their knowledge and skills.
The programme is not intended to replace core learning or textbooks on these subjects, but rather to focus on their impact on the health and wellbeing of the school-aged child. The programme equally is not designed to address in any detail the specialist needs of children with very complex problems.
What it covers?
The Adolescent Health Programme aims to ensure that all health professionals have essential youth communication skills and understand young people’s rights to consent and confidentiality.
This work was commissioned by the Department of Health and delivered by Health Education England (HEE)/elearning for healthcare (e-lfh) in collaboration with a consortium of professional bodies. The materials have been written by subject specialists and experts in their particular field and have been subjected to extensive and ongoing peer review. The sessions have undergone a review within the last 3 years and as a result have an improved design as well as having been updated in line with current guidance and references.
The Adolescent Health Programme comprises 65 elearning sessions, grouped together by topic into 13 main elearning modules. There are an additional four modules (Modules 14-17 which cover Levels A-D). Each level references relevant sessions from within the key 13 modules and covers sessions which provide introductory knowledge through to an advanced or specialist skills. Sessions will signpost the learner to other learning where appropriate.
The modules comprise of individual e-learning sessions, which take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. The sessions include interactive elements, case studies and self-assessments to reinforce learning and there are a range of resources signposted at the end of each session.

This learning path includes 14 introductory knowledge sessions (i.e. based on competences using ‘know about’). All introductory sessions for each module should be at level A. We envisage that these sessions are generic for all health professionals.
This learning path includes 21 sessions based on the acquisition of deeper knowledge (i.e. ‘understand’). This level also involves learning attitudes, which are related to a deeper understanding. Level B contains more in-depth knowledge in which you are required to understand the specific issues to a much greater degree than in Level A.
This learning path includes 14 sessions based on applied knowledge and understanding – Skills (i.e. ‘be able to’). These sessions build on level B and enable the learner to develop necessary skills. For example, show the use of (begin to develop) analytical clinical reasoning skills in a given topic or context.
This learning path includes 15 sessions based on specialist skills (‘be able to’). Sessions at this level apply to specific medical skills of diagnosis and management and build on sessions from level C.
This session describes four evidence-based talking therapies used for treating mental health problems in young people in a range of settings. It also briefly covers current guidance on the management of specific conditions and makes reference to pharmacological interventions when appropriate.
This session introduces the basic elements of young people friendly services. The policy context and evidence for specific young people focused services is explored. The importance of young people’s views is acknowledged as a focus for service improvement.
