e-VTE comprises of three sessions:

VTE_01 Demographics, epidemiology and risk of VTE

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the incidence and prevalence of VTE in the population
  • Demonstrate an understanding of differing incidence according to age, gender and ethnicity
  • Describe factors which increase susceptibility to VTE including the effect of comorbidities such as chronic disease and cancer
  • Demonstrate an understanding of genetic influence on susceptibility to VTE

VTE_02 Methods of thromboprophylaxis

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain modern methods for thromboprophylaxis both pharmacological and mechanical
  • Appreciate the research evidence that supports the use of such methods
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate use of such methods in hospitalised patients with reference to national guidance

VTE_03 Implementation of thromboprophylaxis in hospital

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the process of VTE risk assessment
  • Describe the roles and involvement of patients and of different members of the multidisciplinary team in thromboprophylaxis
  • Appreciate the systems at Trust level, such as clinical governance and audit, that support effective implementation
  • Explain the importance of raising awareness of VTE and of education

 

Please note that as part of the continual review of e-VTE, the session, Implementation of Thromboprophylaxis: Challenges in Primary Care has been withdrawn. Elements from this session are incorporated within the existing three e-learning sessions. An additional e-learning session focusing on the clinical aspects of VTE prevention in primary care is currently being explored with the Royal College of General Practitioners.
