5000 people enrol on Becoming Simulation Faculty Programme

The NHS England TEL team launched Becoming Simulation Faculty (BSF) as a national blended learning programme to support the professional development of simulation educators, practitioners, technicians and managers in health and care.  Over 5000 people have now enrolled since its launch. 

The programme delivers a national approach to simulation faculty development, enhancing professional capabilities and supporting continuing professional development of multi-disciplinary teams.   

Co-designed and authored with experts from across the simulation community in the UK, BSF addresses the current variability in professional development opportunities across the country, ensures equitable access to learning and enhances simulation and immersive learning practices at scale.    

It aligns with the ambitions of the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, the Educator Workforce Strategy and the National Safety Syllabus by supporting hybrid education and workforce development, ensuring high-quality, safe care delivery.   

The programme is running a core course (6 theory-based online elearning topics and a face-to-face workshop) throughout 2024. Topics include Educational Theory in Simulation Based Education (SBE), Creating a Simulated Learning Environment and Debriefing and Feedback. From 2025 the course will be extended to cover advanced learning opportunities such as Simulated Patients and Developing the simulation technician. To date, we have delivered successful workshops in 2 of the 8 regions of England, with several more planned over the coming months. New sessions launched on Information Governance elearning

New sessions have been added to the existing Information Governance elearning programme to support frontline staff working in health or social care who need to share confidential information as part of their jobs. 

The following sessions are available on the elearning for healthcare (elfh) Hub and will soon also be on ESR: 

  • Becoming an information asset owner: This session guides new Information Asset Owners (IAOs) on how to get started in the role. It explores information assets and information risk, the importance of managing information assets and registers appropriately, the responsibilities of the IAO, and their relationship to other roles relating to information assets. 
  • Managing subject access requests: This session is for staff members managing subject access requests (SARs) or providing information for SARs. It explores what is meant by a SAR and individuals’ legal rights regarding SARs. It provides a process for managing standard SARs and works through some special scenarios involving SARs.

Foundation programme July update – Make the most out of supervised learning events

Supervised Learning Events (SLEs) are an essential part of your training in your two foundation years. You could get even more out of them by doing the SLE sessions now at the start of the year.  

SLEs provide a formal way of recording feedback and comprise part of the evidence to support progress against the Foundation Programme Curriculum. SLEs should also be used to highlight areas of good practice and suggest areas for further improvement.

Updated elearning modules for continence and catheter care

Nursing staff, healthcare assistants and allied health professionals across all settings can access updated elearning which aims to reduce the risk associated with catheterisation.

The ‘Continence and catheter care programme’ is a collaboration between Health Innovation Oxford and Thames Valley and NHS England and is available on the elearning for healthcare (elfh) hub and aims to improve knowledge and awareness of all aspects of continence and catheter care.

The programme covers the different types of incontinence, assessment and management strategies. Emphasis is placed on avoiding catheterisation and on how to reduce the risk of catheter acquired urinary tract infection (CAUTI) in situations where catheterisation is unavoidable.

CAUTI is a significant source of avoidable patient harm. Many catheterisations are clinically unnecessary and can lead to poor outcomes, longer hospital stays and increased costs.
