Dental exemptions for dental hygienists and dental therapists

Posted on: November 28th, 2024 by Charlotte Murray No Comments

A new learning programme is available for dental hygienists and dental therapists to help navigate the changes under law, to supply and administer medicines within the Exemption framework (Human Medicines Regulations 2012), supporting the care of patients.

The elearning, developed in partnership with NHSE WT&E, comprises of six sections which include case studies and peer discussion as part of the learning and will take learners approximately 2 hours to complete. Although this programme was designed for dental hygienists and dental therapists, other members of the dental team may also find this learning useful.

The programme supports dental hygienists and dental therapists to apply these regulatory changes in practice. The elearning will link to activities dental professionals already undertake under Patient Group Directions (PGD), or as part of normal working using Patient Specific Directions (PSD) and will ask learners to extend this knowledge to working under exemptions.

You can access this new programme via the NHS Learning Hub.

The training launch follows on from the publication of the guidance on the supply and administration of medicines by dental hygienists and dental therapists, and the recently held webinar for contractors, dental hygienists and therapists.

Radiation safety the focus of new elearning

Posted on: November 26th, 2024 by Vanessa Bassnett No Comments

NHS staff working near sources of ionising and non-ionising radiation can access new elearning to highlight safe working practices and protect them from harm.

The interactive programme supports staff who may be exposed to low levels of radiation due to working on wards or departments or accompanying people to departments where radiation is used. It provides an overview of identifying hazards and risks, safety signage and the types on controlled areas which may be found in a hospital.

It also explores the legislation and risk assessment to minimise exposure, procedures to ensure staff safety and the use and care of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Topics covered include:

  • Ancillary worker protection
  • Radiation protection for sentinel node lymph biopsy theatre staff
  • Basic MRI safety for new referrers

The training is available on the Learning hub. For more information visit the programme page https://www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/radiation-safety/

Transnasal Endoscopy

Posted on: November 21st, 2024 by Charlotte Murray No Comments

The Transnasal Endoscopy (TNE) elearning is now live and is essential training for endoscopy nurses, as well as medical, surgical and clinical endoscopists. The elearning consists of 6 sessions that are focused on how to deliver effective TNE within the diagnostic pathway.

The NHS is focused on reducing the 6 week waiting times and backlog for upper GI endoscopies, as well as improving the diagnostic patient experience. To deliver this a TNE service has been created through a £2.5 million capital fund. It is anticipated that through this investment upper GI cancer diagnosis times will be improved. The Transnasal Endoscopy elearning will support this important work and the roll out of TNE roll out nationally.

Full details about the elearning and session details can be found on the Learning Hub.

The ABCDE Approach elearning: An update to Recognising and Managing Deterioration programme

Posted on: November 21st, 2024 by Charlotte Murray No Comments

Identifying the signs of Sepsis and acting quickly is the subject of new ABCDE Approach elearning which is now available on the NHS Learning Hub.

ABCDE stands for Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure. The ABCDE approach underpins the NEWS2 tool that is designed to support clinical judgement in the assessment and treatment of a potential sepsis. When treating sepsis, failure to recognise patient deterioration and act in a timely manner is a significant patient safety risk.

There are two levels learners can choose from to ensure they are accessing the right content for their needs:

  • Universal is aimed at a wide variety of people, including those working as healthcare assistants, support workers, junior nurses.
  • Advanced is aimed at experienced healthcare professionals, such as nurses, allied health professionals, and junior medical professionals.

The ABCDE Approach – elearning for healthcare has been produced as part of the update to the Recognising and Managing Deterioration programme. This is to align with updated NICE guidance on sepsis published on 31st January 2024.

The Identification and Management of Sepsis in Community Based Care

Posted on: November 21st, 2024 by Charlotte Murray No Comments

The Sepsis and Community Based Care training has been updated to provide the latest training on sepsis response within the community. This learning is provided as part of the Sepsis Awareness programme.

The identification and management of sepsis within the community is critical in reducing deaths from sepsis overall. As many as 70% of sepsis cases develop within the community and knowing what to look for and how to respond to warning signs helps save lives. In addition to the new session on adult sepsis, there are also new sessions focusing on sepsis management in children and young people, as well as for people with learning disabilities.

The Paediatric Sepsis in Community Based Care session provides guidance on how to recognise and responses to sepsis in different childhood age ranges. It also covers what the next steps are after identifying a child with possible sepsis.

The Sepsis and People with a Learning Disability session is aimed at anyone caring or supporting people with a learning disability. It helps learners recognise when a person may be becoming unwell with sepsis and will give them the knowledge and confidence to know what to do. Learners will explore why people with a learning disability are at greater risk of sepsis and what can be done to reduce those risks.

All of the session updates have been created in line with the follow the most recent NICE Guidelines published in January 2024.

Visit the programme page for more information and to access the training.

New Care Certificate scenario for staff involved in caring for patients with cancer

Posted on: November 21st, 2024 by Charlotte Murray No Comments

This new scenario is an opportunity for learners to apply the principles outlined in the Care Certificate Standards in a cancer care setting. Learners will be presented with a series of questions throughout the scenario which should be answered based on the Care Certificate knowledge-based sessions.

This session helps to improve the understanding of staff involved in caring for patients with cancer and has been developed by the NHS England TEL Team, (NHSE), the Workforce Team and the Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance.

The Workforce Team at Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance is dedicated to enhancing the cancer workforce through collaboration and education. Their mission is to implement transformational and innovative programs that align with the goals of the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan.

The Care Certificate provides a framework to ensure that all support workers have the same introductory skills, knowledge and behaviours to provide compassionate, safe and high-quality care in their workplace settings.

Each new scenario uses patient case studies and examples from the working environment to help colleagues apply the Care Certificate Standards within their work setting. The scenarios cover key aspects including preparing for a shift, handover meetings, and examples of clients and factors of their care to consider. Learners then experience supporting the clients through a particular session and updating their care plan or patient notes afterwards.

To find out more and to access the full Care Certificate elearning programme, please visit the programme page on the elearning for healthcare hub.

Updated Overseas Visitors NHS Cost Recovery elearning

Posted on: November 11th, 2024 by Vanessa Bassnett No Comments

Updates are available for the Overseas Visitors NHS Cost Recovery elearning programme to reflect changes to policy and support health and care staff.

NHS England e-learning for healthcare (elfh) has worked in partnership with the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England Financial Oversight and Delivery to refresh and update the programme. The refresh will enhance the training and education of health and care staff to operate the overseas visitors cost recovery process for NHS funded services.

The programme consists of 9 session and aims to build confidence and knowledge in the cost recovery process and support NHS and private organisations to adopt accurate cost recovery practices in line with the charging regulations. All sessions have been quality tested to reflect critical policy amendments, such as changes because of the UK leaving the EU, and systems that support health and care staff to manage the overseas visitor cost recovery process.

This programme can be used by individuals directly involved in the cost recovery process, such as Overseas Visitor Teams and equivalent, and wider health and care staff looking to grow their awareness.
