These modules have been developed following a short mapping exercise and review of resources against the Maternity Support Worker Competency, Education and Career Development Framework. We have identified that there is a need to develop 4 elearning modules: Screening, Immunisations in pregnancy and post natal period, Anatomy and Physiology and Legal and Ethical Frameworks.
This programme has been written with MSWs in mind, however, it will be useful for anyone that deals with expectant mums.
Once all modules have been completed we would suggest that you that revisit the Screening and Immunisation modules periodically as things do change and the content is updated continuously to react to those changes.
All other modules will be reviewed at the agreed intervals and amended if required.
This is an introductory session around screening and focuses on a conversation between a Maternity Support Worker and an expectant mother. The content explores what screening is, why it is necessary and what is being screened for, along with signposting to useful resources. The module links to a Public Health England elearning module that contains all of the required up-to-date information in relation to screening.
Immunisations in pregnancy and post natal period– this session will provide the learner with a useful introduction to immunisations in pregnancy and post natal period. The aim of this module is to enhance Maternity Support Worker awareness of the national immunisation programme. On completion, Maternity Support Workers will have an understating of the immunisation programme in maternity, why vaccination is recommended, the vaccination schedule and a recap of the vaccine preventable diseases.
This session gives an overview of physiology related to the role of the Maternity Support Worker. Case studies will provide you with the opportunity to consider how to apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to your role and the care you provide as a Maternity Support Worker.
This session will look at what law and ethics means, as well as the concept of ethical practice. The session will explore the relevant legislation and national guidelines that inform practice and consider the difference between legislation, standards, policies and guidance. Several topics will be covered in order to support understanding: confidentiality, data protection, legal and ethical responsibilities (including those to the employer), duty of care, and raising concerns.
