About the Introduction to the Pelvic Floor During Pregnancy programme

The NHS Long Term Plan (2019) committed that “all women will have access to multidisciplinary pelvic health clinics and pathways across England” by March 2024.

NHS England therefore committed to the phased implementation of Perinatal Pelvic Health Services (PPHS), which will lead local improvements to perinatal care for ‘mild to moderate’ pelvic floor dysfunction around birth.

To support the implementation of Perinatal Pelvic Health Services (PPHS) this education module has been developed for anyone who requires a general awareness or those whose regular practice involves supporting women with perinatal pelvic healthcare, this could include nurses, health visitors, physiotherapists, midwives, Maternity Support Workers, obstetricians, GPs and other professionals responsible for ensuring provision of the service.

This module will cover:

• the structure and anatomy of the pelvic floor
• the mechanism and function of the pelvic floor, with reference to the ante-natal, intrapartum, and post-natal period
• the effects of pregnancy and childbirth on the pelvic floor mechanism during the ante-natal, intrapartum, and post-natal period
• the principles of teaching pelvic floor exercises
• the importance of maintaining maternal levels of general fitness
• when to seek help

NHS healthcare staff in England – ESR

The Introduction to the Pelvic Floor During Pregnancy programme is also available to NHS healthcare staff via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR). Accessing this e-learning via ESR means that your completions will transfer with you throughout your NHS career.

Not an NHS organisation?

If you are not an NHS health or care organisation and therefore do not qualify for free access to the Learning Hub, you may be able to access the service if you have an existing OpenAthens account. Please go to Learning Hub and sign in with your existing credentials.
