About the Changing Story of Cancer programme
In 2019 Macmillan Cancer Support funded a 2 year programme in Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care System (ICS) to improve relationships between primary, secondary and community care. The programme aims to support patients and their carers whilst living with and beyond cancer.
As part of the programme, an elearning module about cancer as a long-term condition was developed. The module aims to support health and care professionals in understanding that the outcomes for people living with, and beyond cancer, have changed and the relevance of this to their roles.
About the elearning
This elearning module was developed to provide health and care professionals with an introduction to cancer and to support them in feeling confident when talking to patients about cancer as a long-term condition.
Topics include:
• the high-level facts and figures about cancer
• how outcomes for people diagnosed with cancer have improved
• why cancer can be considered a long-term condition
• where to access further training, if required
The module takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and forms part of the continuing professional (CPD) for the NHS workforce.

As part of the 2 year programme in Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care System (ICS), research and literature reviews highlighted:
• 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime (CRUK, 2015)
• Kearney et al (2003) highlighted that some healthcare professionals had negative attitudes towards cancer, although there had been positive developments in screening and cancer treatments
• public and healthcare professionals’ perceptions of cancer are similar, with an initial negative response (Wood and Ward, 2000; Robb et al, 2014)
- local training needs analysis, undertaken across Surrey Heartlands, showed local professionals understanding of their role in supporting people with cancer is variable, providing further evidence of the need to provide educational resources on the topic
