About the Respiratory Disease programme

The Respiratory Disease elearning programme has been developed to provide an overview of respiratory care across the entire pathway and promote better patient care. It aims to provide all health and social care professionals and multidisciplinary teams with the appropriate level of knowledge, skills and experience they need to deliver effective respiratory disease prevention and care to people with respiratory disease, and those at risk of respiratory disease.

Respiratory disease affects 1 in 5 people in England and is the 3rd biggest cause of death. Lung cancer, pneumonia and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease are the biggest causes of respiratory deaths. Respiratory disease has been identified as a new national clinical priority in the NHS Long Term Plan (LTP). The NHS is investing in improved treatment and support for those with respiratory disease. The NHS LTP outlines how it will make improvements along the full pathway from symptom onset to ongoing care, including early detection and diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.

The Respiratory Diseases Toolkit aligns to the NHS LTP and provides learners with a comprehensive list of online resources that can be used to support workforce upskilling, training and development.
