About the programme

Procedure induced anxiety affects the majority of children on their journey through the healthcare system. This anxiety may be generated by any intervention, from the simplest and transient to the most complex spanning the majority of a child’s lifetime.

This core competency training programme provides a comprehensive account of research evidence that illustrates the prevalence and consequences of procedure induced anxiety. It offers the reader an in-depth understanding of anxiety management strategies, allowing them to integrate these into their practice with a view to reducing both anxiety and the consequent psychological morbidity experienced by children undergoing medical interventions.

We see this training as a minimum core competency for people who work with or care for children (particularly children requiring any form of medical intervention).

Sessions cover the following areas:

  1. Introduction – Anxiety
  2. Non-verbal communication
  3. Vocal and verbal communication
  4. Enhanced communication strategies
  5. Procedure-induced anxiety management for neurodivergent children
  6. Parental anxiety
  7. Premedication
  8. Equipment and environment: anxiogenic stimuli
  9. An Introduction to elective management and preparation
  10. Psychology
  11. Play
  12. Technology

More information

This programme has been generated to impart the knowledge established from almost a century of published research illustrating the significant prevalence and consequences of procedure induced anxiety in children. Despite extensive research in this field, and a clear definition and illustration of the implications, few have embraced the lessons that this research imparts. As a direct consequence, rather than being trained to manage and reduce anxiety, many paediatric trainees have unfortunately been trained to adopt practices that can increase the prevalence of trauma and consequent psychological morbidity within the paediatric patient population. This programme has been generated to address this void in training with a view to improving the lives of children under our care.

Primary and secondary audiences

This programme is written and appropriate for all medical professionals and support workers caring for children, particularly children requiring some form of medical intervention.

It will inform, offer an understanding, educate, and support the practice of anyone working with children in any setting.
