Fluids: Practical Prescribing in Adults provides information on clinical situations where intravenous fluids are required and offers practical advice about the most appropriate fluids in a variety of situations.
Users completing the course will achieve the following learning outcomes:
- recall the indications for intravenous fluids
- summarise a patient’s fluid and electrolyte requirements
- recall the commonly available intravenous fluids
- determine which intravenous fluids should be given in common clinical situations
- select the appropriate combination of fluids to meet the needs of a variety of patients.
The course gives an oversight of the three indications for intravenous fluids: maintenance, resuscitation, and replacement. It also discusses how, in many clinical scenarios, more than one type of fluid is required to meet the needs of the patient and how to monitor the patient appropriately.
