About the Trauma-informed communication with people experiencing homelessness and rough sleeping programme

The elearning session focuses on communicating effectively with homeless and/or rough sleeping patients in urgent and emergency care settings, for example, emergency departments. The aim of the session is to improve identification of homelessness to meet legal duties. Helping staff get necessary information from homeless and/or rough sleeping patients by using appropriate language with a person who may have a reduced level of understanding when unwell and in an unfamiliar environment. The session will take no longer than 20-minutes to complete.

More information

Both the ‘UEC Recovery 10 Point Action Plan’ published in September 2021 and ‘Delivery plan for recovering urgent and emergency care services’ published January 2023 map out the priority in addressing health inequalities in urgent care settings. The published emergency department homelessness and rough sleeping guidance documentation was devised to ensure all emergency department settings can provide a consistent, patient-centred and high-quality service to people experiencing or at risk of, homelessness and rough sleeping. The elearning session has been designed to support the aims and objectives of all 3 publications.
