Identifying the signs of Sepsis and acting quickly is the subject of new ABCDE Approach elearning which is now available on the NHS Learning Hub.

ABCDE stands for Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure. The ABCDE approach underpins the NEWS2 tool that is designed to support clinical judgement in the assessment and treatment of a potential sepsis. When treating sepsis, failure to recognise patient deterioration and act in a timely manner is a significant patient safety risk.

There are two levels learners can choose from to ensure they are accessing the right content for their needs:

  • Universal is aimed at a wide variety of people, including those working as healthcare assistants, support workers, junior nurses.
  • Advanced is aimed at experienced healthcare professionals, such as nurses, allied health professionals, and junior medical professionals.

The ABCDE Approach – elearning for healthcare has been produced as part of the update to the Recognising and Managing Deterioration programme. This is to align with updated NICE guidance on sepsis published on 31st January 2024.
