Bite-sized mouth care guidance now available for all healthcare staff

Posted on: October 11th, 2022 by Kieron Bradshaw No Comments

Healthcare staff can now access up-to-date guidance on a range of mouth care topics with 6 new bite-sized video training sessions.

The sessions are part of our Mouth Care Matters elearning programme and are particularly relevant to any staff caring for people who have difficulty looking after their own oral health.

The sessions offer up-to-date guidance on a range of mouth care topics, including:

  • Oral and general health
  • Brushing teeth
  • Denture care
  • Dry mouth
  • Managing resistance to mouth care
  • Mouth care at the end of life

Each video is accompanied by a series of randomised questions so that users can test their knowledge of each topic.

The sessions have been produced by Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) and the HEE South West Mouth Care Matters Team, in collaboration with the Oral Health Foundation and North Bristol NHS Trust.

Mouth Care Matters is a Heath Education England initiative to improve the oral health of those receiving care, whether this be in a hospital, care home or in their own home. Good mouth care contributes to good oral health, and is an important part of general health and wellbeing. It allows people to eat, speak and socialise without discomfort or embarrassment.

The new bite-sized training videos aim to enable healthcare staff to enhance their knowledge in a manageable way, allowing you to better care for people who need support with their oral health.

A personalised certificate of achievement can be downloaded once all 6 sessions have been fully completed.

Help beat heart disease with new online training sessions

Posted on: September 28th, 2022 by Kieron Bradshaw No Comments

World Heart Day (29 September) is an opportunity for everyone to consider how to beat cardiovascular disease, and we are using it to highlight 3 new sessions that are available within our Heart Failure and Heart Valve Disease elearning programme.

The new sessions have content relevant to both primary and secondary care, including:

  • secondary care management of heart failure
  • cardiovascular disease prevention and rehabilitation
  • transforming heart failure care across your Primary Care Network.

The sessions have been developed by Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) and NHS England, in partnership with Mid Hampshire and Southampton Community Cardiology Services, University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust and Kings College NHS Trust.

Around 7.4 million people in the UK are living with heart and circulatory diseases. This figure is expected to rise as we see an ageing population, improved survival of people with existing heart diseases, and the prevalence of comorbidities.

Our new elearning sessions seek to support healthcare teams to manage increased pressure on services, and provides training on areas including early diagnosis, reducing hospital re-admissions, and standardising and embedding high-quality care processes across Primary Care Networks.

Alongside the new content, existing sessions within the programme include:

  • An Introduction to Heart Failure and Valve Disease
  • How to Diagnose Heart Failure and Key Issues in an Echo Report
  • How to Optimise Management of Heart Failure in Primary Care
  • Heart Valve Disease – Introduction
  • Heart Valve Disease – Diagnosis and Management in Primary Care
  • Heart Valve Disease – Treatment and Follow Up
  • Heart Valve Disease – Endocarditis

Each session takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and there are assessments on key learning points. Learners may download a certificate on completion of each session, to evidence professional development.

An evaluation survey is also available to capture feedback on these sessions.

Accessing the elearning

You can access the elearning via the Heart Failure and Heart Valve Disease programme page.

The Heart Failure and Heart Valve Disease elearning programme is also available to the health and care workforce via AICC and the Electronic Staff Record (ESR).

New online training supports the delivery of personalised care for people with long-term conditions

Posted on: August 10th, 2022 by Kieron Bradshaw No Comments

A new elearning programme is available to help health and care staff deliver more personalised care to people with long-term conditions. The programme, developed by Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh), focuses on personalised care, support planning, prehabilitation and rehabilitation.

As multimorbidity becomes more prevalent, meeting the needs of people with long-term conditions is one of the biggest challenges facing the NHS. More than 15 million people in England are living with a long-term condition, and in many cases people have more than one, resulting in poorer quality of life and a greater risk of premature death. Treatment and care for these conditions can also use up to 70% of acute and primary care budgets.

A personalised approach to care and support is vital to ensure that people’s needs are fully identified and planned for, taking their strengths and developed abilities into account.

A range of topics are explored in the new elearning sessions, including:

  • key theoretical principles underpinning prehabilitation screening, assessment, and interventions
  • the impact of rehabilitation interventions on the needs and symptoms of patients
  • the role of multidisciplinary teams (in particular, allied health professionals), in supporting people with long-term conditions.

The PRosPer elearning programme was originally developed by Health Education England and Macmillan Cancer Support, to help improve personalised care and support planning for people with cancer.

Since developing the initial elearning programme, it has been recognised that much of the content could be helpful for staff caring for patients with a range of long-term conditions. It has now been developed to apply to this broader patient group.

Anybody who provides care or treatment for people with long-term conditions will find this training helpful.

More sessions will be added later in 2022, and we will provide an update when they are available.

Doctors in Training Induction programme updated

Posted on: July 13th, 2022 by Kieron Bradshaw No Comments

The Doctors in Training (DiT) Induction elearning programme has been reviewed and updated by subject specialists ahead of the new academic year.

Following feedback from practising clinical staff as well as doctors currently in training, sessions from the programme have been updated to improve the experience for learners.

DiT is aimed at foundation doctors (F1 and F2) and focuses on professional skills in the workplace through 3 patient journey scenarios, along with an assessment to confirm compliance.

It addresses some identified gaps in knowledge for doctors prior to starting their next year on 1 August.

It is also suitable for returning doctors and doctors from overseas working in primary care, secondary care and community settings.

The 3 patient journey scenarios are based around areas that doctors in training have highlighted as those they find most challenging. They include:

  • Blood transfusion and consent
  • Safe prescribing and venous thromboembolism (VTE)
  • Mental Capacity Act and death certification

The learning objectives for this programme have been specially written by experts:

More information, including access details, is available on the Doctors in Training Induction page.
