New elearning programme aims to support training of AHPs in neonatal care

Posted on: July 27th, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with Health Education England’s National Maternity Team to develop a new elearning programme to support the training needs of allied health professionals (AHPs) working in neonatal care.

The programme consists of an introductory session plus 8 foundation sessions aimed at occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, dietitians and physiotherapists, as detailed below:

Introduction to AHPs in Neonatal Care

Speech and Language Therapy in Neonatal Service

  • The role of a speech and language therapist in neonatal care – introduction and background
  • The role of the speech and language therapist in neonatal care – principles of practice

Physiotherapy in Neonatal Service

  • Introduction to the role of the neonatal physiotherapist
  • Neurological assessment of the neonate

Occupational Therapy in Neonatal Service

  • Overview of the role and scope of occupational therapy in neonatal services
  • Introduction to occupational therapy practice in neonatal services

Dietetics in Neonatal Service

  • Introduction to principles of neonatal dietetics Part A
  • Introduction to principles of neonatal dietetics Part B

The resource was developed in response to Implementing the Recommendations of the Neonatal Critical Care Transformation Review which highlighted that the role of AHPs in neonatal care differs to practice in older children and adults, demonstrating the need for AHPs with specific skill sets. AHPs play an important role in embedding principles of care that impact all babies on the neonatal unit and beyond, ultimately improving long term outcomes for babies and their families.

New session on climate change now added to All Our Health programme

Posted on: July 7th, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) to develop a new elearning session for the All Our Health programme.

Climate Change helps all health and social care professionals use their trusted relationships with patients, families, and communities to protect the health of people and planet by taking actions which improve health and reduce carbon emissions.

The session has been developed in response to the world’s worsening climate crisis as the health of the planet is inextricably linked to human health and wellbeing. A healthy planet provides us with our most basic needs: fertile land for food production, safe water to drink and clean air to breathe. The warming of the planet, known as ‘climate change’, is degrading our planet’s life-support system and threatens our ability to thrive and survive. Climate change is happening more quickly than previously feared and represents an urgent global crisis requiring a bold, united response.

To support action against climate change, the session offers advice and information to help all health and care professionals:

  • understand specific activities linked to transport, housing, food, green space, and social and health inequalities that can support a healthy planet and improve population health
  • reduce the contribution that health and care have on the climate crisis such as prioritising treatments and technologies with a lower environmental impact

The session also signposts learners to other sources of useful information such as HEE elfh’s Environmentally Sustainable Healthcare elearning programme, Walking for Health and Medact.

It complements the 28 existing sessions within the All Our Health programme which covers a range of public health topics including air pollution, cardiovascular disease prevention, mental health, social prescribing, workplace health, healthy ageing, and child and adult obesity. All Our Health also features 5 interactive townscape sessions where learners can click on various buildings, such as the GP surgery and school, to access support on topics such as breastfeeding and child oral health.

To access the latest resource, please select the Climate Change session on the All Our Health programme page.

New resource supports ambulatory teams treating people nearing the end of life

Posted on: June 7th, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

A new learning path for ambulatory care teams has been added to Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh)’s end-of life-care for all programme.

Ambulatory teams consist of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals who offer same day care to patients at the hospital. This means that patients are assessed, diagnosed, treated, and can go home the same day, without being admitted into hospital overnight.

This learning path was collated with the assistance of the Ambulatory Assessment Team at Oxford University Hospitals. It is designed to support ambulatory team members to be more confident in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients nearing the end of life.

For more information and to access the resource, please visit the learning path, within the end-of-life-care for all (e-ELCA) programme.
