Posted on: March 16th, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASSHH), the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh to develop a new elearning session for the Sexual Health and HIV programme.

The resource – Diagnosing Mycoplasma Genitalium – is aimed at doctors and nurses specialising in sexually transmitted infections and non-specialists who are completing specific additional training in this area. The session focuses on the use of tests to diagnose this increasingly recognised sexually transmitted infection.

On completion of the resource, which takes approximately 20 minutes to complete, learners will be able to explain the epidemiology of Mycoplasma genitalium and know when and how to test for it.

The Sexual Health and HIV programme features more than 140 resources which have been widely used by more than 27,000 colleagues. It provides the knowledge framework for healthcare professionals treating and supporting people with sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, and related conditions.

New vulnerabilities and trauma informed practice session added to All Our Health programme

Posted on: March 9th, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) to develop a new elearning session for the All Our Health programme.

Vulnerabilities and Trauma Informed Practice is aimed at frontline health and care professionals to help them use their trusted relationships with individuals, families and communities to address the impact of vulnerabilities.

The session describes the meaning of vulnerabilities, risk factors and trauma informed practice which seeks to address the barriers that those affected by trauma can experience when accessing care and services.

It also highlights actions that healthcare professionals can take to address vulnerability in individuals such as putting measures in place so that individuals feel emotionally and physically safe and being transparent with advice.

The session also signposts to other useful sources of information such as Better Health and Every Mind Matters. It complements the 27 existing sessions within the All Our Health programme which covers a range of public health topics including dementia, falls and fractures and physical activity.

All Our Health also features 5 interactive townscape sessions where learners can click on various buildings, such as the GP surgery and school, to access support on topics such as breastfeeding, childhood obesity and smoking in pregnancy.

To access the latest resource, please select the Vulnerabilities and Trauma-informed Practice session on the All Our Health programme page.

Posted on: March 8th, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare, part of the Technology Enhanced Learning Team, has just reached the milestone of 500 elearning programmes in its catalogue.

HEE elfh works in partnership with the NHS and professional bodies to support patient care by providing free elearning resources to educate and train the health and care workforce

HEE elfh’s programmes cover subjects from alcohol and tobacco intervention to anaesthesia, dentistry to dementia, emergency medicine to end of life care, mental health to midwifery supervision, and sepsis to statutory and mandatory training. The online training sessions enhance traditional learning, support existing teaching methods and provide a valuable reference point.

There have been more than 81 million session launches on the elfh hub, more than 34 thousand elearning sessions available to access and there have been over 13 million hours of effective learning time.

Dr Neil Ralph, head of Technology Enhanced Learning, said: “We are delighted to reach this important milestone within elearning for healthcare. Our programmes have amassed more than 2 million registered users over the last 15 years and we have seen exponential growth during the COVID-19 pandemic as online learning rapidly replaced face to face training.

“We are proud to support the health and care workforce with our high-quality elearning resources and look forward to developing many more programmes for our colleagues.”

The 500th programme to be added to the elfh catalogue is Virtual wards enabled by technology: a multidisciplinary elearning programme.  This programme was developed by NHS England and Health Education England elearning for healthcare to support doctors, nurses and allied professionals in the use of technology to provide safe, acute-level care to patients at home.  The elearning is for clinicians to gain an understanding of implementing and running a virtual ward enabled by technology.

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with Health Education England’s AHP team and the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust to add new sessions to the Supporting AHP Students elearning programme.

The resource provides non-registered AHP assistants and support staff with training to develop their understanding of student education and to develop their skills in supporting students and educators within their teams.

The new sessions comprise the following topics:

  • The Student Journey Part 1: University and Placements
  • The Student Journey Part 2: Becoming a Registered Practitioner
  • Practical Skills for Supporting Students

Social Prescribing and the Armed Forces Community module now available

Posted on: February 10th, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

A new elearning module to support the health of the armed forces community (AFC) has now been added to Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh)’s Social Prescribing – Learning for Link Workers programme.

Social Prescribing and the Armed Forces Community is designed to enhance social prescribing link workers (SPLWs)’s support for current serving personnel, veterans and their families. While many aspects of their health needs are the same as other members of society, there are sometimes significant differences from other patients, particularly conditions related to life in the forces, and the overall impact of military life on the family.

This module – developed in partnership with NHS England and NHS Improvement – provides an overview of the unique challenges of service life and how SPLWs can support this community. On completion of the module, learners will gain new skills such as:

  • gaining knowledge of the key legislation and policies in relation to the AFC
  • identifying a range of services and what they offer to the AFC
  • reflecting on social prescribing processes from own and client perspectives and evaluate implications for the AFC

It also includes sources of further information and support. Primarily this module is aimed at SPLWs but may also be of interest to anyone supporting members of the AFC.

The module has been developed as part of a 2 year demonstrator funded by NHS England and NHS Improvement’s Armed Forces Health Team, the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust and supported by Northumbria University – The Northern Hub for Veterans and Families Research and the South West Integrated Personalised Care Team.

For more information and to access the module, please visit the Social Prescribing – Learning for Link Workers programme page.

New session on telephone conversations added to end-of-life care for all programme

Posted on: February 2nd, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

A new session on time-critical telephone conversations has been added to Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh)’s end-of-life care for all public access elearning programme.

The new session explores the structure, strategies and phrases that can be used when obtaining information or delivering unwelcome news to relatives over the telephone in time-critical situations, such as a deteriorating patient. This has been particularly prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic where visiting restrictions have highlighted the importance of the telephone as a mode of communication in healthcare.

The session focuses on rapidly acquiring information and communicating unwelcome news concerning death, dying and deterioration in a sensitive manner.

HEE elfh has also updated the following sessions:

  • Dealing with challenging relatives
  • Skills which facilitate good communication

The end-of-life care for all programme, developed in partnership with the Association for Palliative Medicine, is designed to enhance the training and education of all those involved in delivering end-of-life care such as social care workers, support workers, administrative and clerical staff, and volunteers.

For more information and to access the new and updated sessions, please visit the end-of-life-care for all (e-ELCA) programme page.
