Communicating with Empathy programme updated

The Communicating with Empathy elearning programme, which aims to promote sensitive and effective communication in end-of-life care, has been updated.

It has been redesigned by Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) as part of the End of Life Care for All (e-ELCA) programme and is based on previous content which was created and donated by PALLE8.

Communicating with Empathy consists of 6 sessions:

  1. Introduction to communication skills and how these are applied in end of life care
  2. Making the most of listening
  3. What do we mean by body language?
  4. Responding to challenges in end of life care
  5. Assessing and responding to communication needs
  6. Examples of communication challenges: distractions in the workplace and communicating when there are language barriers

Each session offers valuable, interesting and accessible learning that will be useful for informal carers, agency and care home staff, healthcare assistants and other colleagues providing end of life care.

Care Certificate elearning programme launches hit 2 million

The Care Certificate elearning programme has passed the milestone of 2 million session launches.

Developed by Health Education England (HEE), Skills for Care and Health Education England’s elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh), the Care Certificate elearning programme continues to be an essential resource for the health and care workforce in developing the knowledge needed to successfully pass the Care Certificate.

The Care Certificate is a set of 15 standards developed for the health and social care support workforce, to provide a framework to ensure that all support workers have the same introductory skills, knowledge and behaviours to prepare them to deliver care in their workplace setting. Those expected to complete the Care Certificate may include employees new to care, adult social care workers, carers in a residential or nursing home, a hospice or home care worker. It is also available to those working in non caring roles such as in the kitchen and maintenance teams.

This programme of elearning has been developed to support the theoretical component of each standard of the Care Certificate. The resources also include a Student Toolkit and an Assessor Toolkit, providing support on how to use the elearning programme to achieve the Care Certificate. It is freely available to access for staff in the health and care sectors.

Updates made to the COVID-19 vaccination elearning programme

Since the COVID-19 vaccination programme went live, the content of the different sessions which make up this programme has been updated and amended as more information about the vaccines and the vaccine programme has become available.

For those who have already completed this elearning programme, these updates are detailed below, starting with the most recent.

 

24 October 2023

The training and assessment for the Pfizer BioNTech Comirnaty 3 micrograms/dose COVID-19 vaccine has now been updated for the Autumn 2023 campaign, including the addition of material about the latest Omicron XBB.15 variant vaccine that will be administered to eligible younger children from 16th October.

This revised material joins the already updated training sessions and assessments for the Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty-branded COVID-19 Vaccines for older children, adolescents and adults and the Moderna Spikevax COVID-19 vaccine for adults, all of which now meet the requirements for the autumn 2023 campaign.

It is recommended that new vaccinators undertake the Core elearning session before completion of the relevant vaccine specific session(s).

Important additional information has been added to the session descriptions for VidPrevtyn Beta about changes that must be immediately adopted.

Staff who complete any training and assessment before the Autumn 2023 updates have been made, must be aware that some of the content does not align with the requirements and clinical guidance for the Autumn 2023 vaccination campaign. It is always advisable for staff to undertake the latest training. For this reason, if you undertake the ‘Spring 2023’ version(s) of these sessions you may wish to complete or revisit this training and assessment once the latest version is available. Users may need to verify their completion of the updated COVID-19 vaccines training for the autumn 2023 campaign. Staff should comply with their employing organisation’s training requirements.

The Core elearning session and its accompanying assessment have been updated to include the autumn 2023 vaccination campaign and the latest Green Book content.

Pfizer BioNTech, AstraZeneca and Moderna vaccine sessions all updated to include

  • the latest vaccine effectiveness data
  • reference to JCVI interim advice about a booster vaccination programme
  • myocarditis and pericarditis reports following the Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna vaccines
  • capillary leak syndrome reports following AstraZeneca vaccine
  • revised advice on co-administration and giving COVID-19 vaccine when other vaccines have recently been given
  • advice about mixed vaccine schedules
  • JCVI advice about the recommended interval of 8 to 12 weeks between vaccine doses

  • new JCVI advice on COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant women

 

AstraZeneca session more substantially updated to include

  • new advice about very rare blood clotting and unusual bleeding condition following vaccination with AstraZeneca vaccine and the subsequent new contraindications and precautions to this vaccine, including changes to age group recommendations

Doctors in Training Induction programme updated

The Doctors in Training (DiT) Induction elearning programme has been reviewed and updated ahead of the new academic year.

Following feedback and reviews on the current content, the programme has been updated and reviewed by subject specialists to improve the experience for learners.

DiT is aimed at Foundation Doctors (F1 and F2) and provides knowledge in 8 key subject areas. It addresses some identified gaps in knowledge for doctors prior to starting their next year on 1 August.

It is also suitable for returning doctors and doctors from overseas working in primary care, secondary care and community settings.

The 8 subject areas are:

  • Blood transfusion
  • Consent
  • Death certification
  • Mental Capacity Act
  • Risk management
  • Record keeping
  • Safe prescribing
  • Venous thromboembolism (VTE)

The programme focuses on professional skills in the workplace through 3 patient journey scenarios and each one comes with an assessment to confirm compliance. The learning objectives for this programme have been specially written by experts.

New sessions added to Intensive Care Medicine elearning programme

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine to develop 2 new sessions for the Intensive Care Medicine elearning programme.

The sessions take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete and comprise the following topics:

  • Induction of Anaesthesia in the Critical Care Unit: Part 1
  • Rheumatological Emergencies

The elearning for Intensive Care Medicine (e-ICM) programme provides 9 modules of resources (elearning sessions, links to open access review articles, guidelines and multiple-choice questions) covering the syllabus for training in intensive care medicine.
The resources will benefit anyone caring for critically ill patients as well as trainees in intensive care medicine.

MindEd infographic highlights programme’s success during COVID-19

Health Education England elearning for Healthcare (HEE elfh) has produced an infographic charting the achievements of its flagship mental health programme, MindEd, through the pandemic.
MindEd: A year in review highlights the successes of the elearning programme from April 2020 to April 2021 by featuring a record-breaking 50,265 session launches in May last year. It also shows that, on average, a session was launched every 90 seconds and 12 hours of learning was completed every hour, 365 days a year.

The infographic also offers a percentage breakdown of users based on their profession and found that 40 per cent of learners came from a health background while 15 per cent worked in education.
Positive feedback from learners, mental health statistics and details about the Coronavirus Staff Resilience Hub can also be found on the infographic.

MindEd offers more than 500 free open access elearning sessions about the mental health of children, young people, adults and older people. The resources cover a range of topics including suicide and self-harm prevention and adverse childhood experiences. Emergency services colleagues can also access tips on enhancing the physical and mental wellbeing of staff who find themselves working in difficult situations.

SCRIPT: supporting safer prescribing practices in primary care

The SCRIPT elearning portfolio for the primary care workforce includes 24 modules in 4 categories, developed for GPs, GP trainees and other prescribing staff in primary care settings. The modules cover a range of therapeutic topics relating to prescribing and medicines safety in primary care settings, including:

  • Principles of Prescribing
  • Therapeutic Groups
  • Prescribing in Medical Emergencies
  • Prescribing in Special Circumstances

Every module takes approximately 60 minutes to complete. All course materials have been authored by a team of expert healthcare professionals and are regularly reviewed and updated.

New County Lines Exploitation session added to All Our Health programme

A new elearning session to help health and care professionals protect vulnerable children from exploitation has been developed by Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) and Public Health England.

The UK Government defines County Lines as a term used to describe gangs and organised criminal networks involved in exporting illegal drugs into one or more importing areas within the UK, using dedicated mobile phone lines or other form of ‘deal line’.

Such gangs are likely to exploit children and vulnerable adults to move and store the drugs and money and they will often use coercion, intimidation, violence (including sexual violence) and weapons.

This new bite-sized resource, part of the All Our Health programme, helps health and care professionals to improve their knowledge of County Lines activity and offers advice on how they can support families and young people at risk of exploitation.
On completion of the session, learners will:

  • understand how county lines work
  • know the extent and consequences of county lines exploitation
  • recognise associated risk and protective factors for county lines exploitation
  • recognise indicators of county lines exploitation and the actions for professional practice

NBIA Monthly Update - June 2021

In May 2020, the National Breast Imaging Academy (NBIA), in partnership with Health Education England elearning for healthcare (elfh), launched their elearning programme for radiographers, radiologists and breast clinicians.  This is the eleventh update about the programme.

Some of the most popular sessions in the elearning programme include Breast Imaging Services in the UK, Image Interpretation and Mammography: Working in a Mobile Unit. Learners commented that session content was “very helpful and informative” with “good presentation and explanations”.

What’s new?

There are 107 elearning sessions available on the elfh Hub.  The latest sessions to be added include:

  • Mammographic Imaging of the Augmented Breast
