New Frailty e-learning programme aims to ensure there is equity in the understanding and knowledge of frailty across the workforce

A leadership collaborative consisting of frailty specialists, Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh), the London Clinical Network for Frailty, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Wessex Academic Health Science Network have developed a new elearning programme looking at frailty as a complex multi-system, long term condition.

This exciting and much needed programme promotes a universal language in frailty identification that will support health and social care staff, as well as members of the public, to meet the needs of individuals living with varying degrees of frailty, to deliver improved health outcomes.

This elearning programme aligns with the national and regional Ageing Well strategies for improvement. It explores the multi-system complexity of frailty via the Geriatric 5Ms. This simple framework which comprises Mind, Mobility, Medications, Multi-complexity and Matters most encompasses all the elements which are important when considering holistic care for those living with frailty.

The programme is split into three tiers, aligned to the learning needs of different groups. This ranges from the general public, reception staff and porters to clinicians working in acute frailty services.

The programme is compliant with Frailty, A framework of core capabilities (2018) and has been funded by HEE’s Urgent and Emergency Care Workforce Collaborative for London.

New Dysphagia elearning resources are available

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) worked in partnership with Health Education England, Specialist Pharmacy Service, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, National Institute for Health Research Devices for Dignity MedTech Co-operative and clinical experts to develop a new elearning session on Dysphagia and Medicines for carers and care home staff. There are also new assessments on existing sessions for carers and caterers in social care settings.

Dysphagia, which is difficulty chewing and/or swallowing food and drinks, has serious implications for a person’s health and wellbeing, with increased likelihood of chest infections, malnutrition, dehydration, choking incidents and hospitalisations. Patients with dysphagia may be unable to swallow their medicines safely.

 

About the Dysphagia elearning programme

The Dysphagia elearning programme has been designed to support knowledge and understanding of the management of dysphagia, specifically in the context of a care home environment. However, the sessions will also be useful to those supporting people with dysphagia in other environments, including hospital and community settings.

Care home workers, including managers, nurses, care workers, catering staff and the wider NHS team, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, speech and language therapists, dietitians, and others working with patients with dysphagia will find this resource helpful.

 

About the elearning

The new session focuses on Dysphagia and Medicines. It describes how patients with swallowing difficulties may need changes to their medicines in order to take them safely, and the actions that carers and care home staff need to take.

The session includes sections on who to contact, what information to collect and describes the different ways patients may be advised to take medicines; including when and how to crush tablets or open capsules and when liquid medicines might be preferred. It includes advice on giving medicines with soft food or thickened fluids.

In response to feedback on existing sessions, dysphagia assessments have been added for health and care workers and for catering staff. The assessments aim to help learners to use evidence as part of achieving dysphagia competencies, as outlined in the Eating Drinking and Swallowing Competency Framework.

In addition to the new elearning session, existing sessions in the Dysphagia elearning programme includes:

  • training and resources
  • workforce

 

Accessing the elearning

The elearning resources are free for the NHS workforce, carers, catering staff and AHPs, and they have been designed to be easy to use.

Updates made to the COVID-19 vaccination e-learning programme

Since the COVID-19 vaccination programme went live, the content of the different sessions which make up this programme has been updated and amended as more information about the vaccines and the vaccine programme has become available. For those who have already completed this elearning programme, these updates are detailed below, starting with the most recent.

 

21 April 2021

All sessions updated to include

  • new JCVI advice on COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant women

 

AstraZeneca session more substantially updated to include

  • new advice about very rare blood clotting and unusual bleeding condition following vaccination with AstraZeneca vaccine and the subsequent new contraindications and precautions to this vaccine, including changes to age group recommendations

 

Some minor wording changes to all sessions following recent updates to the Green Book COVID-19 chapter and new web­­links and images added.

Care Certificate for assessors resources launched

Following requests from the health and care sectors, Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has developed 2 new sessions to assist assessors in supporting individuals being assessed for the Care Certificate programme.

The Care Certificate is a set of standards developed for the health and social care support workforce, to provide a framework to ensure that all support workers have the same introductory skills, knowledge and behaviours to prepare them to deliver care in their workplace setting. The Care Certificate needs to be assessed through both theory and practice and the role of the assessor is fundamental to its achievement.

The 2 new sessions, and their associated support guide, are designed to support assessment in the workplace and will be useful for all staff that have responsibility for making decisions on whether a support worker in health or care has been able to apply the standards set out within the Care Certificate.

The resources are appropriate for those who are new to the role as a workplace assessor for the Care Certificate, and for those who would like to refresh and update their skills in Care Certificate assessment.

Foundation programme – April update

Welcome to your April 2021 update about the Foundation elearning programme.

The Foundation elearning programme has been developed specifically for Foundation doctors by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in partnership with Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) and is approved by UKFPO.

Do you need to complete parts of the curriculum on your e-portfolio which you do not cover in day-to-day practice? If so, why not try some of our free elearning mapped directly to the Foundation Professional Capabilities (Training Outcomes) in the 2016 Foundation Curriculum.

The sessions in the elfh Foundation elearning programme include:

Informatics Skills Development Network (ISDN) toolkit now available

Health Education England (HEE) has developed a toolkit to help regions create their own Informatics Skills Development Network (ISDN). HEE is working with regions around the country to establish ISDNs and this toolkit provides the advice, guidance, templates and examples to use when setting up a regional ISDN.

The programme team are grateful for the content, which has been provided by the North West Informatics Skills Development Network – an established network with over ten years’ experience in this area.

The key topics within the toolkit are:

  • Inaugural annual conference
  • Accreditation programme
  • Setting up special interest groups

End of life care e-learning pathway for care workers

A learning path has been added to the elearning programme End of Life Care for All (e-ELCA) designed for care workers supporting people near the end of life.

The aim of the learning path is to provide care assistants with a greater understanding and confidence when caring for individuals near the end of life and to offer support for their families. It’s relevant for those working in care homes and domiciliary care/care at home services.

The learning path has been updated with support from Skills for Care and includes

core and additional recommended elearning sessions.

The e-ELCA elearning programme was developed by Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) and the Association for Palliative Medicine (APM) to enhance the training and education of the health and social care workforce.

The Skills for Care learning path for care workers supporting a person near the end of life learning path is available on the elfh Hub.

e-Learning programme providing an overview of a career in orthoptics

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with the British and Irish Orthoptic Society to develop an elearning programme that offers an accessible insight into the career in orthoptics.

The learning resource is an alternative to face to face career experiences to enable the learner to gain an understanding of what a career in orthoptics includes and the skills and knowledge required.
The aim of the programme is to bridge the knowledge gap between the rational and emotional benefits of orthoptics and what students can expect to study at university. The interactive content demonstrates the complexity of the course to appeal to those with a strong science background, who may be considering a medical career.
The elearning modules explore 4 specific areas that underpin an orthoptist’s knowledge base to practice as an autonomous clinician:

* Vision function and how this is closely associated to brain development
* Binocular vision
* Eye muscle control and strabismus
* The cranial nerves – and how disease can present as eye symptoms

The programme is aimed at students to demonstrate how science subjects relate to ‘real life’ jobs. Students may wish to access the learning with other career influencers such as career advisors, family and friends. The programme also lends itself as a recruitment tool for mature students, career changers and ex-armed forces and complements other work streams created by the Strategic Interventions in Health Education Disciplines (SIHED) project and Health Education England.

New sessions added to the e-LPRAS programme

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) to add new content to the elearning Programme for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (e-LPRAS).

e-LPRAS offers a wide range of sessions covering the knowledge-base of plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery and is aimed at plastic surgery trainees from speciality training year 3 (ST3) onwards. The elearning will also appeal to consultants, non-consultant career grades and allied health professionals who want to increase and update their knowledge base.

5 new sessions have been added to the programme and 6 existing sessions have been updated.

New sessions are:

  • Applied Anatomy of the Foot and Ankle (Module 8 – Lower Limb)
  • Abdominal Lipectomy (Module 7 – Lower Trunk)
  • Flaps for Skin and Soft Tissue Cover in the Thigh (Module 8 – Lower Limb)
  • Principles of Surgery for Pressure Ulcers (Module 7 – Lower Trunk)
  • Tissue Expansion for Breast Reconstruction (Module 6 – Breast and Chest Wall)

The updated sessions are all within Module 1 – Essentials of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery:

  • Acute Wound Infections
  • Hidradenitis Suppurativa
  • Histology of Muscle and Tendon
  • Human and Animal Bites
  • Reflective Practice in Plastic Surgery
  • Skin Ulcers – Assessment
