New e-learning on tackling homelessness now available

Posted on: September 22nd, 2020 by Hannah Denness No Comments

A new elearning programme has been created to support the health and care workforce in tackling issues associated with homelessness.

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with the Department of Health and Social Care, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Public Health England and NHS England and NHS Improvement to develop the programme.

Tackling Homelessness aims to aid colleagues in understanding the health impacts of homelessness, identifying different forms of homelessness, gaining practical steps to making a referral and highlighting ways organisations can implement the duty effectively.

The programme offers two elearning sessions:
Session 1 – All our Health Homelessness: This session provides an overview of the topic of homelessness to equip health and care professionals with the evidence, data and resources they need to take action on homelessness in your professional practice.
Session 2 – Duty to Refer for Frontline NHS staff: This session describes the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017 duty to refer and provides practical steps to identify people experiencing homelessness. This includes information on how to obtain consent to make a referral to a local housing authority and the steps front-line staff and managers can take to implement the duty to refer.

The following organisations were also involved in developing this elearning: Pathway, Homeless Link, Doctors of the World, Crisis, St Mungo’s, Shelter, Queen’s Nursing Institute.

Posted on: September 21st, 2020 by Leanne Hargreaves No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has been working with the Joint Advisory Group on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at the Royal College of Physicians to add new content to the Endoscopy elearning programme.

The e-Endoscopy programme provides an interactive learning resource for health professionals involved in the delivery of endoscopy services. The courses cover a range of subject areas that are linked to knowledge competencies required by endoscopists, endoscopy trainers and endoscopy nurses and have been carefully aligned with existing recommendations for endoscopy training in the UK.

The Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) course is aimed at endosonographers undertaking or planning to undertake endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue sampling by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) or fine-needle biopsy (FNB).

The Endoscopic Non-Technical Skills (ENTS) course provides a comprehensive overview of the communication, teamwork, leadership, situational awareness, judgement, and decision-making skills necessary to undertake endoscopy effectively. It is recommended by the Joint Advisory Group on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy that all clinicians working in endoscopy complete these modules. The course includes the following sessions:

  • Endoscopic Non-Technical Skills

Healthcare professionals encouraged to discuss physical activity with patients, as new sporting campaign launches

Posted on: September 21st, 2020 by Rachel Gowland No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) partnered with Public Health England (PHE), Sport England and This Mum Moves to develop the Physical Activity for Health elearning programme, providing healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to provide brief physical activity advice to their patients.

The Great British Week of Sport is taking place from Saturday 19 September to Sunday 27 September, as a new initiative led by UKactive, with support from Public Health England’s Better Health campaign and Sport England.  The awareness week aims to highlight the benefits that sport and physical activity have on people’s mental and physical wellbeing.

More about the elearning programme

Did you know that one in four people stated that they would be more active if they were advised by a GP or nurse?

The HEE elfh Physical Activity for Health elearning programme is free and encourages healthcare professionals to initiate conversations with patients relating to the benefits of physical activity in preventing and managing a range of common conditions and supporting general health.

e-Learning for Community Carers - Hydration in Older People

Posted on: September 21st, 2020 by Rachel Gowland No Comments

Hampshire County Council has worked in partnership with Wessex Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) and Health Education England elearning for healthcare (elfh) to develop an elearning programme which aims to increase your knowledge and confidence in assessing an older person’s hydration needs and minimise the risk of poor hydration in a person-centred way.

Aimed at any person working with older people in the community, including care home staff, home carers, family carers and volunteers, the elearning builds on the information and skills you may have already learnt and implemented from the Care Certificate.

The Hydration in Older People elearning is part of the Hydration at Home Toolkit, both of which have been endorsed by the British Dietetic Association.

What can I expect?

Designed to be as interactive as possible, the elearning takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and features a short video and an assessment in the form of a case study.

Whilst the content has been specifically designed for community carers, the messages are relevant to all carers, including those working in acute care settings.

Please note that if you have already completed the hydration in older people elearning via the Hampshire County Council hub, you do not need to repeat the training in the elfh Hub.

Additional resources

The hydration elearning programme is part of the Hydration at Home toolkit which includes resources for the general public, including a hydration leaflet and poster.

New content added to the Midwifery Continuity of Carer programme

Posted on: September 16th, 2020 by Leanne Hargreaves No Comments

Health Education England, in partnership with Improving Practice in Performance (iPiP), have collaborated to add a new elearning session to the Midwifery Continuity of Carer programme.

This programme provides participants with an overview of the underpinning policy changes which have informed both the development of Midwifery Continuity of Carer (MCoC) models and proposed changes of midwifery care in England.

The resource has been designed for those undertaking the HEE National Midwifery Continuity of Carer education programme and all who want to understand more about maternity models based around continuity of carer. Those may include midwives, maternity support workers, obstetricians, managers and commissioners.

The new session provides a base level of understanding of Midwifery Continuity of Carer, its policy drivers and evidence base for delivery. This session is a pre-requisite to be completed prior to attending the National Midwifery Continuity of Carer training workshops and masterclasses.

For more information about the programme, including details of how to access, visit: https://www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/midwifery-continuity-of-carer/.
