New neonatal psychology programme available for staff

Posted on: September 12th, 2023 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

A new first of its kind elearning programme on neonatal psychology has been developed to support better outcomes for babies, families and staff.

Psychologically-informed care takes into account the needs of everyone in the unit, and considers how best to support them for better outcomes. For families this can include managing better while on the unit and being well post-discharge. For staff, psychologically informed care sustains us too.

Developed by NHS England, Association of Clinical Psychologists and neonatal networks, this elearning has been developed to encourage the workforce to think more psychologically – a key area highlighted by patients, advisory groups and the Ockenden report, the Kirkup report and aligns with the new three year plan for joint working across maternity and neonatal settings. No other training like this currently exists for neonatal staff.

Each of the four modules in the programme take approximately 30 minutes to complete and cover the following topics:

  • Psychologically-informed neonatal care
  • Infant wellbeing on the neonatal unit
  • Family wellbeing on the neonatal unit
  • Staff wellbeing on the neonatal unit

Once completed learners will know more about psychologically informed care and have ideas about the ways they can implement this into their daily work. They will also have a better sense of the impact of the work on themselves and what can help them to manage.

For more information and to access the modules, please visit the Neonatal Psychology programme page.

New session promotes health benefits of aquatics and swimming

Posted on: September 6th, 2023 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

NHS England elearning for healthcare has developed a new programme on the unique health benefits of aquatics and swimming.

The resource, developed in partnership with Swim England, Aquatic Therapy Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (ATACP) and the University of Nottingham, has been created following research that highlights how healthcare professionals intuitively believe swimming and aquatic activity provide unique health and wellbeing benefits, ideal for musculoskeletal conditions, chronic pain and weight problems, but they lack the knowledge and skills to make this a more routine conversation with patients.

To address this issue, the 20-minute session raises awareness of the benefits of aquatic activity on health and wellbeing and will enhance learners’ confidence in identifying patients who would benefit most.

It covers the following topics:

  • Helping people navigate their way to swimming and aquatic activity
  • What happens to the body in water?
  • Adaptive effects of aquatic exercise
  • Who can exercise in water?
  • Exploring aquatic activities

It is aimed at GPs, physiotherapists and those who influence an individual’s decision to be active, such as social prescribers and leisure professionals.

For more information and to access the programme, please visit the Aquatics and Swimming programme page.

Interventions guidance aims to support babies, children and young people

Posted on: August 9th, 2023 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

A new schedule of interventions tool has been added to the existing interactive pathways elearning programme.

The resource aims to help local commissioners and service providers navigate current guidance and materials within the Healthy Child Programme – the national public health framework for babies, children and young people.

These schedules bring together evidence, guidance, information and resources to describe local prevention and early intervention and ongoing care activities from preconception to adulthood.

It includes information about preconception care, promoting child development, improving child health outcomes and ensuring that families at risk are identified at the earliest opportunity.

Local authorities, the NHS and other partners can use the tool to inform the commissioning and provision of good quality services for children, young people and families at every level of need, from community and universal to targeted and specialist.

For more information and to access the new resource, please visit the Interactive Pathways programme page.

A warm welcome to Foundation doctors from the elearning for healthcare hub

Posted on: August 7th, 2023 by Kieron Bradshaw No Comments

As we welcome Foundation doctors to the new academic year, we are pleased to advise that first and second year trainees are able to access the official Foundation elearning programme via NHS England’s elearning for healthcare (elfh) hub.

The elearning programme covers the entire foundation curriculum and will provide evidence of a colleague’s learning to the General Medical Council, as well as being recorded in their ePortfolio.

Completing sessions early will help colleagues get more out of their attachments in the Foundation years, and the elearning will also help them to cover parts of the curriculum that they may otherwise not encounter.

May we take this opportunity to warmly welcome colleagues to the Foundation programme, and we hope that you enjoy using these training resources.

Accessing the elearning

All Foundation doctors have been automatically registered on the elearning and can access it at www.e-lfh.org.uk by clicking the ‘Log in to your elearning’ button in the top right hand corner of the page. Colleagues will need to link their ePortfolio to their elfh elearning activity and should refer to the email they have been sent from the elfh Registration Team for information on how to do this.

For more information on how to log in, access your elearning and technical checks, please visit elfh’s support pages.

New programme on managing atopic dermatitis now available

Posted on: August 3rd, 2023 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

NHS England elearning for healthcare has worked with the Pfizer to develop a new programme on the current and future management of atopic dermatitis, also known as atopic eczema.

This very common skin condition, caused by skin inflammation, may start at any age but the onset is often in childhood. 1 in every 5 children in the UK is affected at some stage. It may also start later in life in people who did not have atopic dermatitis as a child.

The 30-minute session looks at the pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical manifestation, patient experience, current treatment and future therapeutic treatments of atopic dermatitis.

It is aimed at healthcare professionals with an interest in atopic dermatitis, such as GPs, children’s community nurses, health visitors, practice nurses, dermatology trainees, paediatric and dermatology nurses and pharmacists.

For more information and to access the new session please visit the Current and Future Management of Atopic Dermatitis programme page.
