New Internal Medicine Training programme now available

Posted on: March 31st, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

A new elearning programme has been developed for internal medicine training (IMT) trainees and trainers by Health Education England (HEE), elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh), the Severn Deanery and the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board.

The programme includes new sessions on delivering outpatient care and outpatient training, applicable to many training programmes, but primarily aimed at internal medicine trainers and trainees. The sessions comprise the following topics:

For trainees:

  • Managing patients in an outpatient clinic
  • Resources for evidencing internal medicine training (IMT) capabilities in practice (CiPs)
  • Procedural skills video resources from the NHS Lothian Mastery Skills Pathway

For trainers:

  • An introduction to Internal Medicine Training
  • How to optimise outpatient training

Within the ‘Managing patients in an outpatient clinic’ session trainees will learn about the delivery of high quality outpatient care, meeting the curricular requirements in this field, and adapting their skills for virtual clinics. A trainer’s session on ‘How to optimise outpatient training’ will support the development of skilled educators in delivering learning in an outpatient clinic environment.

For IMT trainees there is also a newly developed list of available resources within the programme relevant to the IMT CiPs, alongside links to the procedural skills videos created by the NHS Lothian Mastery Skills Pathway.

Updates to the Anaphylaxis elearning programme available

Posted on: March 31st, 2022 by Rachel Gowland No Comments

Working in partnership with Health Education England has refreshed content in the Anaphylaxis elearning programme, developed to help health and care staff understand the causes, signs, and treatment of anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis is a severe, life threatening event and people having an anaphylactic reaction often have changes to their airway, breathing and circulation, so it is vital that these signs are recognised and treated quickly.

Our Recognising and Managing Anaphylaxis session has recently been updated to aid understanding of the recognition and management of anaphylaxis in community and hospital settings. It includes the management of anaphylaxis in adults and children, further treatment in a hospital setting, blood tests and ongoing care for those who experience anaphylaxis.

An Introduction to Anaphylaxis is also available in the elearning programme.

New Clinical Trials elearning session now available

Posted on: March 31st, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

A new session on clinical trials has been developed for the Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products elearning programme.

Developed by Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) in partnership with a range of health organisations including the Advanced Therapy Treatment Centre Network and London Advanced Therapies this new session will enable learners to understand key aspects of conducting clinical trials with advanced therapy investigational medicinal products (ATIMPs).

ATIMPs are medicines for human use which are based on genes, tissues or cells that offer ground-breaking new opportunities for the treatment of disease and injury but have not yet received regulatory approval. This new session is designed to provide learners with a refresher of standard clinical trial practices and explains the additional features which impact on the design of trials for ATIMPs.

The new session, which takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, comprises the following topics:

  • a general refresher of clinical trial practices
  • an overview of the complexities of working with ATIMPs
  • additional features which impact on the design of trials for ATIMPs
  • specific steps required to initiate trials in ATIMPs

It is primarily aimed at healthcare professionals such as nurses, pharmacists, doctors, who are, or will be, engaged in clinical research with ATIMPs and want to further their understanding of the specifics of undertaking clinical trials with these advanced therapies.

For more information and to access the Clinical Trials resource, please visit the Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products programme page.

New adult safeguarding programme now available

Posted on: March 29th, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with NHS England and Improvement to develop a new elearning programme on adult safeguarding.

The Adult Safeguarding in a Secure and Detained Setting programme focuses on adult safeguarding and the roles and responsibilities of those working in these settings across England. It has been developed for a multi-agency audience including prison officers to enable better collaboration between teams and create a culture of safety by embedding safeguarding into everything the prison does.

The learning includes scenarios based in a prison setting, with attention to areas such as elderly care, self-harm and suicide, food refusal, and people with neuro-disability issues. By the end of this session, learners will be able to:

  • define what constitutes safeguarding and at risk within a secure estate setting
  • describe the at-risk factors and how they can impact adults retained within secure estate settings
  • describe the potential impact of risk factors
  • identify the statutory duties that underpin the support of adults at risk

It is envisaged that further case study-based learning within this programme will become available during 2022. Learners are encouraged to provide feedback via the session evaluation if they feel there are particular areas within adult safeguarding in a secure and detained setting, that would be useful to their practice.

For more information and to access the resource, please visit the Adult Safeguarding in a Secure and Detained Setting programme page.

New elearning programme available on violence reduction for the NHS workforce

Posted on: March 28th, 2022 by Rachel Gowland No Comments

The NHS London Violence Reduction Programme has worked with Health Education England (HEE) to design a new elearning resource that will equip NHS staff with valuable skills to support violence reduction in local communities across England.

The self-guided online training will be delivered across two sessions: the first introduces a theory-based approach to understand the causes of violence, whilst the second is a more practical session identifying the role of healthcare services in violence reduction and identifying those at risk. The resource can also be used to stimulate wider conversations about violence reduction within a range of group learning environments, such as workshops and team meetings.

To access the elearning resource, register for a new account or sign in to your existing elfh Hub account and search for the Violence Reduction Programme or access the resource directly.

If you have any questions about the new elearning resource, drop the team an email.

New dementia diagnosis elearning programme now available

Posted on: March 23rd, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

A new elearning programme to support personalised assessment and diagnosis of dementia is now available on Health Education England’s elearning for healthcare Hub.

Assessment and Diagnosis of Dementia: A personalised approach has been developed to support colleagues involved in assessment and diagnosis of dementia to deliver a flexible, person centred service.

The course has been developed in partnership with NHS England and Improvement’s Dementia and Older People’s Mental Health Policy team. 20 sessions within the course cover a range of topics including cognitive assessment, consent and coercion and post diagnosis assessment.

It takes the learner through the process of delivering safe, personalised assessments. This includes face-to-face, telephone and video methods and it identifies good practice at each stage.

At the end of the programme, which takes approximately 15 hours to complete, learners will be able to:

  • identify the appropriate mode of communication for the individual client
  • identify the most appropriate cognitive assessment for the individual client
  • describe the practical considerations for the different modes of assessment

The resource has received support from Professor Alistair Burns, National Clinical Director for Dementia and Older People’s Mental Health at NHS England and NHS Improvement.

He said: “This resource has been developed by a multidisciplinary project team with input from people living with dementia and their families. It is a fantastic resource to support memory clinic teams to deliver a blended service model, providing reliable and safe assessments and diagnoses in a way that is personalised to everyone.”

Newly updated Immunisation on Neonatal Units programme now available

Posted on: March 22nd, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with Thames Valley and Wessex Neonatal ODN to make significant updates to the Immunisation on Neonatal Units elearning programme.

The single session discusses and reviews the issues surrounding vaccination of pre-term infants while resident on a neonatal unit, such as who can give consent, why it is important to administer routine immunisations at the appropriate time and when a delay in vaccination timing may be appropriate. It also includes information on vaccination schedule and best practice for the administration of injections.

There is a national minimum standard for immunisations training and this session is suggested as an additional component for those with a role in immunisation in neonatal units, such as neonatal nurses, midwives and nursing associates.

New updates to the session include an updated routine childhood immunisation schedule, parent information leaflets and changes to who delivers the BCG vaccine. Newly updated information on the procedure for the preparation and administration of intramuscular (IM) injections is also available.

On completion of the session, which takes approximately 40 minutes to complete, learners will gain new knowledge and skills, including:

  • signposting parents and carers to up-to-date information regarding current scheduled immunisations
  • identifying babies who require other vaccinations in addition to the routine childhood vaccination schedule
  • identifying when it may be appropriate to delay vaccinations

For more information and to access the session, please visit the Immunisation on Neonatal Units programme page.

Doctors returning to training supported in escalating concerns and speaking up

Posted on: March 21st, 2022 by Rachel Gowland No Comments

The SuppoRTT team in Health Education England worked with our simulation and immersive technologies team to launch a virtual reality (VR) resource for doctors returning to training. The resource uses a clinical scenario to explore the topic of Escalating Concerns and Speaking Up, skills that are increasingly recognised as contributing to the quality and safety of care for patients.

Read on for more information about the resource and how to access this resource on the Learning Hub.

What does escalating concerns and speaking up mean?

We each play a vital role in shaping the quality of care within the NHS, we must not let our anxieties about being wrong prevent us from speaking up. Every one of us has a responsibility to escalate any concerns we have: to protect each other and our patients.

What can I expect from the resource?

This interactive resource follows a medical trainee who returns from time out of training and encounters challenging interactions and situations during a clinical shift. Learners will immerse themselves in a VR scenario, experiencing an adult acute environment, in which they will explore techniques and develop skills in escalating concerns and speaking up.

A workbook has been produced to enhance and reinforce the learning from the resource that can be accessed within the resource as well as on Learning hub. Learners will also be invited to engage with a set of questions at the end, to help consolidate and reflect on the experience. A certificate of completion will be available to download after completing the resource and the reflective questions.

Although the resource has been designed for training doctors, trainers may find it beneficial to supporting their trainees in developing their skills in this area. Other healthcare professionals returning to training may find it useful to practice escalating concerns and speaking up.

Whilst these scenarios are based in an adult acute setting, the learning is widely transferable to other situations including non-clinical workplaces. It is relevant not just for trainees returning to work but also for international medical graduates, doctors new to the NHS and those moving to a different work environment or specialty. To learn more, watch a clip of the VR resource.

What is SuppoRTT?

The Supported Return to Training for Trainees programme aims to provide training doctors with the tools and resources to feel more confident, supported and prepared in returning to training, wherever they are in England and whatever their formal training programme is. You can read more about SuppoRTT on the HEE website.

Accessing the resource

NHS colleagues can register on the Learning Hub or login with their elfh Hub details to visit the SuppoRTT catalogue page in the Learning Hub or access the resource.

The resource can be accessed on a PC, laptop, tablet or smart phone. The VR video is compatible with VR headsets, including cardboard headsets in combination with a smartphone, and also VR viewers.

Additional VR resources by SuppoRTT

Doctors returning to training may also be interested in a remote consultation resource and Teamworking resources in the Learning Hub. Visit the SuppoRTT catalogue page for more details.

Training in the independent sector for NHS doctors

HEE has launched new communications tools to raise awareness of the option for doctors in training to gain additional practical experience within an independent sector provider, whilst caring for NHS patients.  The NHS is committed to the training of its workforce and with the COVID-19 pandemic, this is more important than ever. Training recovery and education need to be flexible.

These opportunities are open to all doctors in training within a recognised specialty training programme but will be of particular interest for surgical, medical, ophthalmology and anaesthesia doctors in training. An animation and infographic give details of how to gain access and explains educational governance, accountability and indemnity. You can view the new resources on the independent sector pages of the HEE website.

enhance: Enhancing Generalist Skills

Health Education England has recently launched the enhance: Enhancing Generalist Skills programme. This programme details how HEE will deliver the recommendations from the Future Doctor report and build on learning from the pandemic. The programme will help doctors preserve and develop their generalist skills, supporting ‘whole person’ care for complex patients with multiple chronic conditions, and applying knowledge and learning to reduce health inequalities to address local health priorities.

Our programme handbook outlines the background to the work, and, expectations of participants, with a structure to guide learning activities that can meet the programme’s outcomes.
