  • Latest message from our Chief Executive
  • COVID-19 latest updates
  • Overview of HEE education and training news

Weekly messages from HEE

Read the recent message from Dr Navina Evans, Chief Executive, HEE:

The challenge of workforce planning

Ask anyone in health and care sectors what the major challenge is and workforce will be the answer. Then ask the same people what should be done, and their answer is better planning. The real answer is transparent, cooperative, funded social care integrated planning with interventions matched to deliverable timelines. The health and care system needs to work as a collective force for good. To this end, HEE is working with partners to ensure the system has the data, expertise, analysis, and tools to make plans feasible; the service, finance, and workforce alignment to make them tenable; and logical, effective delivery time frames to make them workable. Visit the HEE website to read Navina’s blog in full.

HEE COVID-19 latest updates

We have created a COVID-19 update webpage that provides guidance and information from HEE, which applies to all students and trainees. This webpage also includes HEE COVID-19 surge guidance.

To keep up to date with plans for medical training recovery, visit HEE COVID-19 webpages.

Previous guidance from the NHS regarding deployment of NHS staff from 1 April 2022 has now been paused, as explained in a letter issued from the NHS.

Developing Practice-Based Learning in Mental Health and Learning Disability Settings for the Allied Health Professions

This guide highlights the benefits and opportunities of practice-based learning (PBL) through placements in mental health and learning disability settings for Allied Health Professions (AHP) students, focusing particularly on the professions most common in these settings.

The ideas and examples show how placements have been developed in these settings and highlight the benefits to students, education and placement providers. Ultimately, these placements offer most benefit to patients, service users and families who receive holistic support for their health and care needs offered by the different Allied Health Professions. Read more and access the guide on the HEE website.

Pharmacist Education Summit: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Over 200 delegates attended our joint pharmacist education summit with the Pharmacy Schools Council last week, focusing on equality, diversity and inclusion. The sessions provided a route for many to highlight emerging good practice and resources, and the keynote presentation by Professor Ijeoma Uchegbu was a powerful call to action.

Delegates committed to developing as allies, listening, and being more active in taking the steps to create a change. We are working with the Pharmacy Schools Council to share resources from the event. In the meantime, find out more in this news item from the Pharmacists’ Defence Association (PDA).

New Work Experience Resource Catalogue

The National Work Experience Resource Catalogue is a repository of resources that can be shared to all health and social care colleagues to support the development and delivery of online work-related learning content. Organisations and individuals can submit resources they use in order to share them with others. Anything that provides a deeper understanding of the skills and knowledge required in the workplace for any of the 350 NHS careers (with clear learning outcomes such as, skills events, simulation, demonstrations, scenarios, and Technology Enhanced Learning TEL) can be included.

To access the resource please log in through the Learning Hub and search “Work Experience Resources” at the top of the screen where it says, ‘Search the Learning Hub’. New session on Healthy Ageing added to All Our Health programme

Posted on: March 16th, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) to develop a new elearning session for the All Our Health programme.

Healthy Ageing is aimed at frontline health and care professionals to help them use their trusted relationships with patients, families and communities to promote the benefits of healthy ageing.

This session has been developed in response to the UK’s steadily ageing population.  People are living longer but they are not always living in good health. The average healthy life expectancy differs considerably from region to region with too many people, particularly in the most deprived areas of England, spending a large proportion of their later life in poor health or managing multiple long-term conditions which could be prevented, or the impact lessened, through action on behavioural risk factors, community interventions, such as building social connections, and wider determinants including employment, housing and transport.

To help address this widening gap in life expectancy, the Healthy Ageing session provides advice and information to help all health and care professionals:

  • understand specific activities and interventions that can support healthy ageing and provide holistic care
  • think about the resources and services available in your area that can help people to be happy, healthy and active into later life

The session also signposts learners to other sources of useful information within the NHS, the Royal College of Psychiatrists and The British Geriatrics Society. It complements the 26 existing sessions within the All Our Health programme which covers a range of public health topics including dementia, falls and fractures and physical activity. All Our Health also features 5 interactive townscape sessions where learners can click on various buildings, such as the GP surgery and school, to access support on topics such as breastfeeding and childhood obesity.

For more information and to access the Healthy Ageing session, please visit the All Our Health programme page.

New session on diagnosing Mycoplasma genitalium added to Sexual Health and HIV programme

Posted on: March 16th, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASSHH), the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh to develop a new elearning session for the Sexual Health and HIV programme.

The resource – Diagnosing Mycoplasma Genitalium – is aimed at doctors and nurses specialising in sexually transmitted infections and non-specialists who are completing specific additional training in this area. The session focuses on the use of tests to diagnose this increasingly recognised sexually transmitted infection.

On completion of the resource, which takes approximately 20 minutes to complete, learners will be able to explain the epidemiology of Mycoplasma genitalium and know when and how to test for it.

The Sexual Health and HIV programme features more than 140 resources which have been widely used by more than 27,000 colleagues. It provides the knowledge framework for healthcare professionals treating and supporting people with sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, and related conditions.

For more information and to access the new session, please visit the Sexual Health and HIV programme page.

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) to develop a new elearning session for the All Our Health programme.

Vulnerabilities and Trauma Informed Practice is aimed at frontline health and care professionals to help them use their trusted relationships with individuals, families and communities to address the impact of vulnerabilities.

Posted on: March 1st, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with Health Education England’s AHP team and the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust to add new sessions to the Supporting AHP Students elearning programme.

The programme is flexible in delivery as learners can either access it individually or as part of a peer group. There is no set timeframe for completing each session which each take approximately 1 hour to complete.
