New sessions added to Clinical Imaging and Saving Babies’ Lives elearning programmes

Posted on: December 2nd, 2021 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with the College of Radiographers and the HEE maternity team to develop 3 new sessions for the Clinical Imaging and Saving Babies’ Lives programmes.

The sessions, aimed at sonographers, introduce and explain the ultrasound components of the Saving Babies’ Lives Care Bundle Version 2.

  • Introduction – explores fetal growth restriction and associated risks. It provides an overview of how to evaluate fetal biometry and interpret estimated fetal weight charts.
  • Uterine Artery Doppler Assessment – describes the technique for assessing uterine arteries using Doppler. It also demonstrates how to interpret and report resultant waveforms and graphs.
  • Cervical Length Assessment – demonstrates appropriate equipment settings to optimise the image and technique to acquire accurate images and how to measure and report cervical length.

A 4th session, Middle Cerebral Artery Doppler, will be available soon.

The sessions have been written by subject matter experts Trish Chudleigh, Ellen Dyer and Sonia Cumming. Gill Harrison, Professional Office for Ultrasound at the College of Radiographers has edited the sessions.

To access the new resources, please visit the sessions within the Clinical Imaging programme.

Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare elearning sessions now updated

Posted on: December 2nd, 2021 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for Healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health (FSRH) to update 2 existing sessions in the Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare elearning programme.

The programme launched in September 2020 with 30 new sessions covering a host of topics including anatomy, contraception, sexually transmitted infections and early pregnancy.

Each resource is aimed at a range of healthcare professionals, particularly those working in nursing and midwifery, to help them gain the necessary knowledge to successfully support patients with their sexual reproductive needs.

Sessions 17 and 18 have now been renamed 14 and 15 with new content added, as detailed below. The sessions are required for taking FSRH’s Letter of Competence (LoC) qualifications:

  • Session 14: Additional Training in Subdermal Implants (SDIs). The resource outlines the advantages and disadvantages of an SDI and details the fitting and removal of SDIs, as well as any complications. It also explores the possible side effects and management of SDIs, including the use of local anaesthetics.
  • Session 15: Additional Training in Intrauterine Techniques (IUT). This session provides evidence-based recommendations and good practice points on the insertion of intrauterine contraception (IUC) and techniques used within the UK.

Each resource within the programme is interactive and readily accessible anywhere at any time. Learners can access information, undertake self-assessments and view video clips, animation and real-life case studies to support their learning.

Healthcare professionals who have already completed sessions 17 and 18 have a 6-month grace period until 29 May 2022, which means these sessions will still be accepted as evidence supporting FSRH LoC application submissions made during this period. After 29 May 2022, sessions 17 and 18 will no longer be accepted and the new sessions must be completed.

Stakeholder Briefing – Issue 48

Posted on: November 29th, 2021 by Rachel Gowland No Comments

Key Messages and links to 25 November 2021

Welcome to Health Education England’s regular stakeholder bulletin. In this bulletin we will provide:

  • Chief Executive updates
  • COVID-19 latest updates
  • Overview of HEE education and training news

Chief Executive updates

Creating a single, better organisation with workforce right at its heart
The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care has announced his decision that HEE will merge with NHS England and NHS Improvement to create a single, better organisation with workforce right at its heart.

HEE has long argued that the NHS needs to better align service, financial and workforce planning. This move means those systems will be integrated at national, regional and ICS levels, simplifying the national leadership of the NHS and creating greater synergy around the People Plan, education and training, our reform programme, and workforce transformation.

This will help us to better support colleagues to recruit the health professionals they need to deliver exceptional patient care, both now and in the future. The power to make this merger happen is currently working its way through Parliament as part of the Health and Care Bill so is subject to Parliament’s approval of that measure, expected in Summer 2022. Read more on the HEE website.

Doing the right thing isn’t always easy
The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the extent of health inequalities even more starkly and has emphasised the need for us to improve fairness for everyone. This means ensuring we address ongoing health inequalities by investing the money we have in ways that best meet patient needs.

Our duty to patients, taxpayers and our NHS people is to ensure education and training funds are used effectively and distributed fairly in relation to patient need. Across the NHS, this means we must have open and honest conversations, based on evidence about effectiveness, outcomes, and value for money, about how this money is currently spent and whether it can be spent better. Read more on the HEE website.

HEE COVID-19 latest updates

We have created a COVID-19 update webpage that provides guidance and information from HEE, which applies to all students and trainees. This webpage also includes HEE COVID-19 surge guidance.

If you’re disabled, or have a disability, learning difference, or long-term health illness, including long-term effects of COVID-19 and mental health conditions, you have access to additional support. The process of applying for, and accessing, the support disabled people deserve can feel a little confusing and overwhelming. In partnership with HEE, the Find Your Way guide has broken down the process, so users know exactly to access the support.

Medical

Record number of 4,000 GPs accepted on training placements
A record number of new trainees have accepted placements to become GPs. More than 4,000 new recruits have accepted places to begin specialist general practice training in 2021/ 22. Read more on the HEE website.

Updated statement on funding for psychological professions training programmes
Since our published statements in September, HEE has released an updated statement with FAQs regarding the psychological professions training policy change.
This update confirms HEE will still implement a policy change for future eligibility on NHS funding specific psychological professions’ training programmes for individuals who wish to undertake more than one NHS-funded training. It updates the list of training programmes that will be affected and answers common questions asked throughout the stakeholder engagement activity. If you have any questions you can email mentalhealth@hee.nhs.uk.

Workforce and education initiatives

New workforce redesign tools to support ICSs
HEE has launched two new resources to support systems with their workforce redesign efforts: the Roles Explorer, a collection of resources for use when introducing new roles to inspire design of optimum skill mix, and the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) toolkit to support building and developing teams across professional groups and system structures.

Healthcare Support Worker Development Roadmap Launched
We have launched a learning and development roadmap for healthcare support workers (HCSW), educators and managers – which can help them identify learning and development goals and help improve their skills in order to deliver the best possible patient care. Access the road map here.

The roadmap brings together sources of information and resources to help HCSWs explore their own skills and support them with your ongoing learning and development. The roadmap is designed also to support educators and managers to have learning, development, and career conversations with their HCSW workforce. It contains tools to support these conversations and information about the training and professional development opportunities available for HCSWs.

Work Experience Leeds Deep Dive Research
We have worked with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) on research relating to the breadth and variety of work experience by speaking to those working in the trust. The research findings have now been published alongside HEE’s own recently published Future of Healthcare Work Experience Discover Report.

To view the research findings and the Future of Healthcare Work Experience Discover Report, visit the HEE website.

Initial findings from the economic evaluation of CLEAR published
Initial findings from the first independent economic evaluation of CLEAR show that HEE’s clinically-led national transformation programme is cost-effective, encourages retention and is more likely to deliver results than other complex change projects. CLEAR is a work-based learning programme that is sponsored by Health Education England, hosted by East Lancashire NHS Trust and delivered by 33n, a team of NHS clinicians, data engineers and scientists. Find out more about the economic evaluation of CLEAR on the CLEAR website.

New FeNO in Asthma elearning programme is available

Posted on: November 24th, 2021 by Rachel Gowland No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare worked in partnership with NHS England and NHS Improvement, Accelerated Access Collaborative, Wessex AHSN Network, and the Office for Life Sciences to develop a new elearning programme, focused on FeNO in Asthma. Although developed for primary care professionals, other healthcare professionals may find the programme useful.

What is FeNO?

FeNO (Fractional exhaled nitric oxide), is a test for measuring the amount of nitric oxide in the exhaled breath of patients. The results of the test can help with the diagnosis of asthma, by showing the level of inflammation in the lungs. A patient’s FeNO level helps improve the accuracy of asthma diagnosis and helps indicate which medications will work best for them.

About the elearning module

This programme aims to improve the learner’s understanding of FeNO, how the test is performed and appropriate language to use when talking about FeNO with patients.

A second FeNO elearning module is being developed and due to be released in December 2021. It focuses on the interpretation of FeNO, providing an enhanced description of what FeNO is and how it can be used in the diagnosis of asthma, with case examples, covering a spectrum of clinical scenarios.

More information

For further details on the AAC FeNO programme, visit the NHS England website.

To access the FeNO deployment toolkit, visit the Wessex ASHN website.

New elearning programme on the role of the Caldicott Guardian now available

Posted on: November 24th, 2021 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with the National Data Guardian and the UK Caldicott Guardian Council to develop a new elearning programme for Caldicott Guardians, and those with an interest in finding out more about the role Caldicott Guardians play in keeping people’s health and social care data safe, and ensuring it is used appropriately.

The aim of this elearning session “sharing information and protecting confidentiality in health and care” is to raise awareness and inform a broad range of staff from across health and social care of the importance of Caldicott Guardians and confidentiality in their setting, organisation, or sector. The learning is for staff working in the NHS, adult social care, local authorities and private sector partners.

Two additional sessions, one for new or existing Caldicott Guardians and one for senior staff who may need to appoint or support a Caldicott Guardian will be available soon.

In August 2021, the National Data Guardian published guidance about the appointment, role and responsibilities of Caldicott Guardians. It introduced a formal requirement that increases the type and number of organisations who need to appoint a Caldicott Guardian. This elearning is intended to support those implementing the guidance who may need to understand more about the role. Read more about the NDG guidance and who it applies to.

For more information about the Role of the Caldicott Guardian elearning programme, including details on how to access the free resource, visit the HEE elearning for healthcare website.
