e-Learning programme providing an overview of a career in orthoptics

Posted on: April 20th, 2021 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with the British and Irish Orthoptic Society to develop an elearning programme that offers an accessible insight into the career in orthoptics.

The learning resource is an alternative to face to face career experiences to enable the learner to gain an understanding of what a career in orthoptics includes and the skills and knowledge required.
The aim of the programme is to bridge the knowledge gap between the rational and emotional benefits of orthoptics and what students can expect to study at university. The interactive content demonstrates the complexity of the course to appeal to those with a strong science background, who may be considering a medical career.
The elearning modules explore 4 specific areas that underpin an orthoptist’s knowledge base to practice as an autonomous clinician:

* Vision function and how this is closely associated to brain development
* Binocular vision
* Eye muscle control and strabismus
* The cranial nerves – and how disease can present as eye symptoms

The programme is aimed at students to demonstrate how science subjects relate to ‘real life’ jobs. Students may wish to access the learning with other career influencers such as career advisors, family and friends. The programme also lends itself as a recruitment tool for mature students, career changers and ex-armed forces and complements other work streams created by the Strategic Interventions in Health Education Disciplines (SIHED) project and Health Education England.

For more information about the elearning programme, including details on how to access, visit the Orthoptics Careers Overview programme page.

New Supervision for Multi-Professional Teams e-learning programme now available

Posted on: April 8th, 2021 by Leanne Hargreaves No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) have worked in partnership with NHS England and NHS Improvement and Health Education England to develop a new, free elearning programme to support multi-professional teams across the NHS to understand the basis of supervision in the workplace.

The Supervision for multi-professional teams elearning programme aims to provide an overview of the Core Supervision model through several resources including a core model and operational resources.

This elearning programme has been developed to support with the ‘Core model of supervision for multi-professional teams’, initiated by The GPN 10 Point Plan. The plan was led by the Chief Nursing Officer for England and its overarching focus is to build and develop the capacity and capability needed to be seen across the whole primary care workforce in order to enable the health and care workforce to manage more people’s health closer to home, as well as building GPN capability to support improved and innovative approaches in delivering health and wellbeing.

More information on the ‘Core model of supervision for multi-professional teams’ can be found on the Future NHS Collaboration Platform – Registration required.

How to access the elearning

The Supervision for multi-professional teams programme is available to the health and care workforce via HEE elfh.

New updates for the Respiratory Physiotherapy programme

Posted on: April 8th, 2021 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has updated the free Respiratory Physiotherapy elearning programme to further support physiotherapists treating patients with respiratory conditions, including COVID-19.

The programme, developed in partnership with the University of Southampton, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, launched in September 2020 to support existing and newly qualified physiotherapists who want to update their respiratory knowledge and skills to help prepare them for working in daily and emergency out of hours respiratory care.

The updated content features 4 real life scenarios which have been designed to take learners through the journey of being on-call – from taking initial patient information to giving advice to the medical team. Each scenario gives learners the opportunity to apply their knowledge from the elearning programme to a real life scenario and enables learners to think about their clinical reasoning as the case unfolds.

For example, 1 scenario involves a physiotherapist assessing a patient with existing Bronchiectasis who is presenting with sputum retention and Type 2 Respiratory Failure. The learner is then given the assessment findings and asked to clinically reason and identify the patient’s problems and develop a management plan.

All 4 scenarios end with an opportunity for learners to reflect on their learning and decide what other course of action they might take if they are called to support a similar scenario in practice.

For more information and to access the new resources, please visit the Respiratory Physiotherapy programme page.

COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna e-learning now available

Posted on: April 8th, 2021 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare has worked in partnership with Public Health England and NHS England and NHS Improvement to develop the COVID-19 Vaccination elearning programme.  The elearning programme is designed to provide the health and care workforce involved in the national COVID-19 vaccination programme with the knowledge they need to confidently promote high uptake of the vaccine and deliver the vaccine programme effectively.

The COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna is now available. Currently the national vaccination programme is only deploying this this vaccine to a limited group of vaccination centres. Staff who are rostered to work at these sites are asked to complete the core knowledge session as this is designed to provide essential knowledge about COVID-19 and the key principles of immunisation needed to deliver the vaccine.  Learners should then complete the vaccine-specific elearning session and assessment in advance. Staff working in PCN sites and Hospital Hub settings are not required to complete the training at this time but may want to access it at a future date. In addition, further information about the vaccine characteristics can be viewed via Chapter14a in the Green Book and the Summary of Product Characteristics for COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna (SmPC).

The vaccination elearning programme also consists of the COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine BNT162b2 Pfizer-BioNTech session, the COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca session and accompanying assessment sessions for each.

The elearning sessions describe the national COVID-19 vaccination programme for England. Most of the information in the sessions will be relevant for those involved in the programme throughout the UK and Crown Dependencies. However, those undertaking the programme in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Crown Dependencies should be aware that some details as to how the programme will be delivered may be different. Vaccinators should therefore ensure that they refer to any country-specific information available, so they are familiar with the details of the programme for the country they are practising in.

This elearning programme provides theoretical training.  Practical training in vaccine administration, and assessment and sign-off competency is also required before administering the COVID-19 vaccine.

For more information about the COVID-19 Vaccination programme, including details on how to access, visit the elfh website.

New eating disorders e-learning programme for medical students and foundation doctors

Posted on: April 7th, 2021 by Hannah Denness No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with Beat and the Royal College of Psychiatrists to develop an elearning programme to help medical students and foundation doctors feel more confident in identifying and assessing patients with eating disorders.

The elearning is designed to ensure that all medical students and foundation doctors are trained to understand, identify and respond appropriately when faced with a patient with a possible eating disorder.

This programme is designed to enable them to:

  • Identify the major eating disorders and spot the early warning signs
  • Understand the role of starvation in eating disorders and the effects on the brain
  • Understand common challenges experienced by clinicians identifying people with eating disorders
  • Identify the occurrence of eating disorders in patients who may present with other conditions
  • Understand how to assess for an eating disorder
  • Understand from sufferers of eating disorders about how they confronted their illness
  • Recognise the official guidance and care pathways available

It was developed in response to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) investigation into avoidable deaths from eating disorders, as outlined in recommendations from the Ignoring the Alarms: How NHS Eating Disorder Services are Failing Patients report (PHSO, 2017).

A 2017 survey and review of undergraduate training found that the majority of UK doctors receive less than 2 hours of training and eating disorders during their 10-16 years of medical training and approximately 20% do not receive any training at all (Ayton and Ibrahim, 2018).

While the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (APMS, 2007) in England found that 6.4% of adults screened positive for an eating disorder.

Programme partners are Beat, the UK’s eating disorder charity, and the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Faculty of Eating Disorders.

Supervisors and educators of trainees in other settings may also find it useful.

The elearning content was developed in collaboration with displaced trainees who share their experiences of being displaced, and demonstrates how they can be supported to progress in their training.

About the elearning

This session aims to support educational supervisors in:

  • defining what a COVID-19 displaced trainee is and recognising if your trainee falls into this category
  • explaining the 4 stages in the suppoRTT framework and how to implement it
  • understanding how to support your trainee to maximise their educational and learning opportunities
  • identifying activities that the displaced trainee can complete either at home or at work, dependent on their personal and professional needs and how these fit into the curricular and e-portfolio requirements for progression
  • case studies with interactive videos and reflective questions
  • signposting to key resources for displaced trainees and their supervisors
  • checklists and guidance on risk assessments, pre-return, return and ongoing review meetings
  • enhancing the supervisor’s understanding of the experience of displacement and its impact on a trainee, both professionally and personally, and enabling them to discuss these confidently with the trainee
  • guidance for educational supervisors on communicating to the wider team regarding the experience of displacement and the support available to displaced trainees

The elearning session takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete and enables educational supervisors to reflect on key learning points. A certificate can be downloaded on completion of the session.
