e-Learning to help people living in cold homes

Posted on: February 3rd, 2020 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Around three million people in England live in homes that are too cold. The health effects are enormous – people can end up visiting their GP more, being admitted to hospital, becoming depressed, or even dying because they are just not warm enough at home.

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with Public Health England (PHE) to develop the Helping People Living in Cold Homes elearning programme for health and care professionals.

The elearning resource supports health and social care professionals to put National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance into practice.

Aimed at health and care staff who undertake home visits, the resource provides information on local services that can assist people living in cold homes, such as installing insulation, improving heating systems or helping reduce energy bills.

It also helps people spot the signs of a cold home – including less obvious ones.

With this information, staff can have a conversation with people whose health may be affected by being too cold at home, and signpost them to the relevant local services.

New 'Successful Self Care Aware Consultations' e-learning programme

Posted on: February 3rd, 2020 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England’s elearning for healthcare has worked with NHS England and NHS Improvement, and the Self Care Forum to develop an elearning programme to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to conduct a ‘self-care aware’ consultation with patients and carers.

Aimed at healthcare professionals working in primary care including GPs, pharmacists and nurses, the course has been created to improve the learner’s confidence to advise patients and/or their carers on how they can manage and treat minor health conditions. In addition, it seeks to assist commissioners and prescribers with implementing the guidance for Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) ‘Conditions for which over the counter items should not routinely be prescribed in primary care’ developed by NHS England and NHS Improvement, and NHS Clinical Commissioners.

The programme consists of four elearning sessions to support strategies to improve access to evidence-based information about self-treatable conditions including referral to nhs.uk, the Self Care Forum website or directly to community pharmacists. Sessions include:

Session 1: Context of Self Care in the Wider Healthcare Arena

Session 2: Principles of Management of Self-Treatable Conditions

Session 3: Self Care Aware Consultation

Session 4: Promoting Self Care

All the supporting materials for this programme have been written by subject specialists and experts in this field. The elearning programme is available on the elfh Hub, the Electronic Staff Record (ESR), via AICC links and for registered users of the Centre for Pharmacy Education (CPPE) website.

AICC functionality: Chrome browser – close window behaviour

Posted on: January 16th, 2020 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has become aware of an imminent change contained in the next version of the Chrome browser, version 80. The change is to alter what happens on the close of a browser window and may affect the recording of learner activity when some elfh sessions are accessed via AICC.

For more technical detail of this specific change, please view Google’s information:

https://www.chromestatus.com/feature/4664843055398912

During our testing we have found that this affects what happens when an elearning session is closed remotely by an external Learning Management System (LMS) using our AICC functionality. An error is produced which may, or may not, result in the learner’s activity being recorded. (This is dependent on how the external LMS launches the session).

We are actively working on preventative measures within our session templates to use a different communication method on the close of the window. However, this would rely on a rebuild of each session being used via AICC and as we have a very large catalogue of content available; this is a substantial task. We will address the most popular sessions and update these first, but it will take several weeks to update all the sessions.

The new version of Chrome is due to be available from 4 February 2020.  There is still some debate, on the online community, as to whether Google will implement this change due to the expected impact on websites. Following the update, if the error is encountered, a different browser can be used.

Please be assured that preventative steps will be made to how the elfh Hub handles the closing of sessions ahead of the February release date of the new Chrome browser.

Further updates will be posted on this page as to whether Google make this change and our plans, if required, to update the sessions.

More users than ever accessing the HEE e-LfH Hub

Posted on: January 8th, 2020 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England’s elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) programme is riding a surge in its elearning usage with more users than ever accessing the HEE elfh Hub!

HEE elfh works in partnership with the NHS and professional bodies including Royal Colleges and associations, NHS organisations, charities and other health and care organisations, to support patient care by providing elearning to educate and train the health and care workforce.

In October 2019, there were 911,263 session launches on the HEE elfh Hub, making it the most successful month in elearning for healthcare’s history. October’s usage is the continuation of another triumphant 12 months for HEE elfh, with a staggering 13.8 million elearning sessions launched between July 2018 and June 2019 on the elfh Hub alone. This level of activity is testament to the increasing demand for high-quality elearning content for the health and care workforce.

HEE elfh’s programmes provide an “anytime, anywhere” learning opportunity for those working in health and social care. The content is created by a team of experts to enhance traditional learning and support existing teaching methods, with many programmes also including an e-assessment option providing learners and trainers with evidence of progress.

HEE elfh’s programmes are available to access free of charge on the HEE elfh Hub, the Electronic Staff Record, on local systems using AICC links and via OpenAthens.

For more information about HEE elfh, including a full list of elearning programmes, visit https://www.e-lfh.org.uk/.
