eLearning programme tackles England’s health inequalities

Clinical practitioners across the health and care sector can access training on reducing healthcare inequalities across England.

The resource complements the Core20PLUS5 which identified the following five clinical areas in need of rapid improvement:

hypertension case finding
chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD)
cancer
maternity
mental health

The elearning resources cover these five areas and includes an additional module on healthcare inequalities among patients of sickle cell disease.

By the end of these modules, learners should have a good understanding of health inequalities within each area and should be able to communicate with patients about their clinical condition and care, support shared decision making with patients from marginalised groups and mitigate barriers in accessing services.

New programme explores the link between breastfeeding and perinatal mental health

A new elearning programme that helps the early years workforce better understand the links between breastfeeding and perinatal mental health is now available on the NHS Learning Hub.

Developed by NHS England elearning for healthcare, the Anna Freud Centre and the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, the programme explains how breastfeeding and perinatal mental health are intertwined, and what factors can influence this relationship. It also provides tools and guidance to support staff to deliver self-reflective, person-centred care.

The elearning consists of 2 sessions:
Session 1: The relationship between infant feeding and perinatal mental health
Session 2: Practical skills to support families with infant feeding and perinatal mental health

The programme is intended for anyone involved in providing support to families during pregnancy and the first couple of years after birth, including midwives, health visitors, infant feeding support workers, perinatal mental health specialists, psychological professionals and early years workers.

On completion of this training, staff will be better equipped to provide holistic, wraparound care that is tailored to the needs and circumstances of the family.

Safe prescribing: Foundation update (August 2023)

Welcome to your August 2023 update from the Foundation elearning programme.

Failure to prescribe safely is one of the commonest causes of untoward patient incidents in medical practice. The following sessions support safe practice and include learning on injectable medicines, anticoagulation, antibiotics, prescribing in renal impairment, and other areas of safe medicine use.

Specialist patient safety module launched for management and administration professionals

Management and administration professionals in health and care can now access new modules of the Patient Safety Syllabus training elearning sessions on the elfh portal which have been tailored to support the specific needs of their profession.

The training supports thinking differently about what patient safety means and making healthcare even safer with patient safety case studies covering good practice, human factors, risk, systems thinking and safety culture. There is a certificate of completion for each case study.

Content for both Levels 1 and 2 of the syllabus training have been updated and include improvements to usability, interactivity, and navigation and a certificate of completion and five sector specific patient safety case studies in total for Mental Health, Maternity, Healthcare mangers and administrative staff care, Primary Care and Acute Care.

All updates to the content and functionality have been made in response to feedback from users. There is also a self-assessment for the Access to Practice module which learners must pass to move on to the sector-specific sessions and a Certificate of completion for each case study area.

Patient safety is a collective responsibility and a key priority for health and care. This training is available to anyone NHS and Health care staff and supports the NHS Patient Safety Strategy, emphasising a proactive approach to identifying risks to safe care.

New training aims to address HIV related stigma in healthcare

Developed by NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care, in partnership with Manchester Foundation Trust, George House Trust and Dibby Theatre, the resource is the first of its kind, providing the opportunity for learners to get up to speed with the latest facts around HIV, including the importance of early diagnosis and effective treatment.

The session features people living with HIV talking through their experiences from diagnosis to everyday management, as well as sharing examples of great care received by health staff.

Aimed at all patient-facing health and care colleagues as well as wider colleagues working in primary care and frontline roles, the training covers:

The current landscape of HIV transmissions and the challenges faced
The impact of HIV stigma
Normalising HIV as a long-term manageable condition
Living with HIV – importance of compassion, empathy and openness in healthcare and treatment

Marking MR Safety Week

MR safety is important all year round but this week focuses on patient and staff safety and advises on best practice.

The primary hazard in MRI is the very strong magnetic field that is produced by the MR scanner – and remember, for most MR scanners, this magnetic field is always on. There is a risk of metal objects becoming strongly attracted to the scanner forming dangerous projectiles, and implants such as heart pacemakers and aneurysm clips being adversely affected. Such incidents have led to serious injuries and fatalities. Implants and other potential contraindications present risks for patients undergoing MRI, therefore MR units must have policies and procedures in place for minimising these hazards.

There are 2 sessions in our Clinical Imaging elearning programme covering MR safety, which can be found in the module: Introduction to Imaging Technologies.

MR safety is covered in more detail in the MRI Safety programme which is structured around the needs of specific MR safety roles and explores the hazards associated with the use of MR equipment and offers guidance on best practice so as to protect patients and staff.

The Society of Radiographers has produced information leaflets relating to MRI safety for services to download, these include pause and check for MRI , safety information for patients, referrers and ward staff . These are all available on the society of radiographers website policy and guidance document library. Their publication Safety in Magnetic Resonance Imaging outlines the professional responsibilities, training, education and practical safety guidance for departments.

New bite-sized sessions support colleagues’ emotional wellbeing

A new programme to support the emotional wellbeing of mental health crisis colleagues has been developed by NHS England elearning for healthcare.

The series of six bite-sized sessions, created in partnership with national charity Samaritans and NHS England, provides helpful advice and guidance on how colleagues can support their own and others’ emotional wellbeing.

The sessions cover:

Myths about suicide
Five levels of listening
Recognising and challenging negative thinking traps
Setting expectations
Support versus solve
Building resilience

The elearning was developed to support the mental health crisis workforce but is also aimed at psychological professions, social workers, assistant practitioners, art therapists and occupational therapy support workers.

While the 20-minute sessions can be completed individually, the content also complements and builds on the skills and concepts from the Samaritans Listening Skills & Emotional Health (LS) course delivered for NHS England.

An Introduction to Personal Health Budgets - revised elearning module

The ‘introduction to personal health budgets’ elearning module has been updated. This online training is intended to support all staff who are involved in the delivery of personal health budgets. The module covers a variety of topics including: the legal right to have a PHB, budget management options, and what a PHB can and cannot be spent on. It also offers guidance on the steps involved in implementing and maintaining a PHB, and the key features that ensure people experience the best outcomes possible.

SCRIPT: supporting safer prescribing practices by healthcare professionals

Healthcare students and professionals can improve their knowledge in prescribing and therapeutics by accessing free elearning through SCRIPT which is designed to meet the continuing professional development needs of those working with medicines and to benefit patient care.

Launched in 2010 by the University of Birmingham and OCB Media, SCRIPT was commissioned by NHS England to provide elearning programmes for foundation doctors and dentists, paediatric trainees, nurses, general practitioners, pharmacists and other non-medical prescribers. The programmes are also appropriate for undergraduate medical, pharmacy and nursing students.

Covering a wide range of therapeutic topics, SCRIPT modules take approximately 60 minutes to complete. Content has been authored by a team of expert healthcare professionals and is reviewed on a regular basis.
