About the Breaking barriers in HIV care programme

This session has been created by NHS England as part of the Welcoming Doors Project, in partnership with ViiV Healthcare, to help you support people living with HIV in NHS Talking Therapies.

This session aims to increase understanding about HIV for staff working in NHS Talking Therapies services (formerly known as IAPT) in order to improve patient experience.

Learning objectives

  • By the end of this session, you will be able to:
  • Outline the key physical and psychosocial aspects of living with HIV.
  • Explain the importance of language to reduce stigma when discussing HIV.
  • Describe the impact of HIV-related stigma, including its role as a barrier to accessing NHS Talking Therapies services.
  • List factors to consider when conducting assessments with and delivering interventions to people with HIV in NHS Talking Therapies services.

The session will be beneficial for anyone working in NHS Talking Therapies services, including those in administrative and clerical roles, supporting patients and service users with mental health problems, including low mood, anxiety and depression, related to the experience of living with HIV.

The session has been developed by subject matter experts, including people living with HIV, and takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes to complete. After completing the session you can download a certificate to evidence continuing professional development, along with your own Welcoming Doors materials.
