About the MHSDS Upskilling Programme

The MHSDS Upskilling Programme, a collaborative initiative by the NHSE Mental Health Infrastructure Team, NHSE regions, and ICBs, including Voluntary, Community, and Social (VCS) and Independent Healthcare Sector (IHS) organizations, is designed to empower the NHS mental health workforce with the essential knowledge and skills required to understand and engage with the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS).

This elearning programme offers training sessions for diverse stakeholders working in NHS mental health and/or delivering services at local level. This includes clinical staff, service managers, data leads, commissioners, and analysts – including smaller providers responsible for submitting data to the MHSDS.

At its core, this initiative aims to contribute to a cultural shift within NHS mental health services. This is by building confidence in the workforce regarding data submission and usage and fostering a deeper understanding of the MHSDS as a secondary-use dataset.

The programme includes different training materials, guidance, and resources covering the importance of data collection, the process of submitting, accessing and using the data to inform and monitor services.

Primary and secondary audiences

The primary audience of this training programme are on individuals with an interest in or responsibility for recording and submitting data to the MHSDS:

  • System Level: Mental Health ICB leads, contract and commissioner managers, performance and intelligence leads.
  • Local Level: Service managers, Clinical Chief Information Officers, clinical and administrative staff, BI analysts, EDI specialists, data leads, and anyone tasked with submitting the data, including small VCS/IHS providers.

In addition to these audiences, the training programme can also benefit colleagues working at national and regional levels in the NHS and other Arms-Length Bodies. This includes Mental Health policy leads, Regional BI Analysts, and senior leads.
