About the NHS Flexible Working Programme

This elearning module equips NHS leaders, managers and HR professionals with the knowledge and tools to implement flexible working and drive a culture of flexibility within their organisations. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of flexible working, its benefits and challenges, and practical solutions to successful implementation.

By fostering flexible working, leaders can advance their organisation’s alignment with the People Promise theme, ‘We work flexibly‘, while contributing to improved workforce sustainability and operational efficiency.

More information

The NHS has prioritised flexible working as part of its People Promise to modernise the work environment and attract and retain a diverse workforce. Positive trends in flexible working are reflected in the National Staff Survey, with increasing scores indicating improved perceptions and practices. However, there is still room for improvement, particularly in enhancing staff confidence and competence in flexible working implementation. This initiative contributes to the Long Term Workforce Plan (LTWP[SF1] )actions on wellbeing, retention, workforce sustainability and increased flexibility in healthcare practices leading to improved patient care.

Primary and secondary audiences

The primary audience for this programme includes NHS leaders, managers and HR professionals. These individuals are key to:

  • creating a workplace culture where flexible working is normal
  • designing and applying flexible working policies
  • supporting staff development in fair and creative ways

The secondary audience includes other stakeholders involved in:

  • workforce planning
  • day-to-day operations
  • staff wellbeing initiatives

This ensures flexible working is supported across the whole organisation.
