Posted on: August 9th, 2023 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

A new learning path on equality diversity and inclusion (EDI) has been added to the End-of-Life Care for All elearning programme.

The path features 11 resources covering a broad range of topics including symptom management in people with learning disabilities, communicating with non-English speaking patients and end-of-life care for people experiencing homelessness. It also features a new session on Palliative care: shifting the focus of care from equality to equity.

Since the programme became publicly available to everyone last October, there has been more than 275,000 new session launches with many learners praising the programme content:

“Very interesting session with a lot of information, and I have learnt a lot.” (Assessment and management of agitation and delirium session)

“This section is educative and it’s like an eye opener for me as a care assistant.” (End-of-life care in care homes and domiciliary care settings session)

“Clear structure, poignant and clearly written material. Well presented.” (The importance of good communication session)

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with the Association for Palliative Medicine to update 4 existing sessions within the public access End-of-Life Care (e-ELCA) elearning programme.

The updated sessions focus on communication and end-of-life care for LGBTQ people, as listed below:

  • Request for euthanasia
  • Initiating conversations about end-of-life care: dementia
  • Telephone communication
  • Inclusive palliative and end-of-life care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) people

Since October 2022, e-ELCA has been made public access so that everyone, regardless of their employment status, can access vital elearning resources on providing end-of-life care. We have now retired the previous public access end-of-life care for all programme, but all content can be found on the main e-ELCA programme page.

To access, learners need to register on the HEE elfh Hub. When registering you will be asked for information in the ‘About you’ section. If you are registering with a personal or with a non-NHS work email address, please select ‘None of the above option’. If you are a care worker or hospice worker and your employer hasn’t given you a registration code, please also select the ‘None of the above option’.

e-ELCA offers more than 175 sessions grouped into 9 modules including assessment, communication skills, symptom management and bereavement care.

The programme also contains learning paths which provide targeted learning for specific staff groups, defined curricula and condition-specific end-of-life care.

Please note, the programme covers sensitive topics including death, dying, the different stages of end-of-life and bereavement which may be distressing to some learners.

New session on advance care planning added to end-of-life care for all programme

Posted on: May 26th, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

A new elearning session on engaging effectively about advance care planning with people from ethnically diverse backgrounds has been added to the end-of-life care for all programme.

The session aims to build healthcare professionals’ confidence and expertise in supporting people from diverse ethnic backgrounds to think ahead about deterioration and dying at a time and level that is comfortable for the patient.

It is based on findings from the Thinking Ahead Study where more than 70 people from ethnically diverse communities and 60 health professionals shared their experiences of thinking ahead about deterioration and dying, which suggested that patients from ethnic minority communities access end-of-life care less and later than other sections of the population, and that clinicians may lack confidence in supporting them.

The session was created in partnership with the LOROS: Hospice Care for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to be part of a wider group of resources intended to promote awareness and learning about the key findings of Thinking Ahead Study to explore ways in which doctors and nurses can support patients more effectively at the end of their lives in line with their religious, spiritual and cultural values.

The end-of-life care for all programme, developed in partnership with the Association for Palliative Medicine, is designed to enhance the training and education of all those involved in delivering end-of-life care such as social care workers, support workers, administrative and clerical staff, and volunteers.

For more information and to access the new session, please visit the end-of-life-care for all (e-ELCA) programme page.

New session on telephone conversations added to end-of-life care for all programme

Posted on: February 2nd, 2022 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

A new session on time-critical telephone conversations has been added to Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh)’s end-of-life care for all public access elearning programme.

The new session explores the structure, strategies and phrases that can be used when obtaining information or delivering unwelcome news to relatives over the telephone in time-critical situations, such as a deteriorating patient. This has been particularly prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic where visiting restrictions have highlighted the importance of the telephone as a mode of communication in healthcare.

The session focuses on rapidly acquiring information and communicating unwelcome news concerning death, dying and deterioration in a sensitive manner.

HEE elfh has also updated the following sessions:

  • Dealing with challenging relatives
  • Skills which facilitate good communication

The end-of-life care for all programme, developed in partnership with the Association for Palliative Medicine, is designed to enhance the training and education of all those involved in delivering end-of-life care such as social care workers, support workers, administrative and clerical staff, and volunteers.

For more information and to access the new and updated sessions, please visit the end-of-life-care for all (e-ELCA) programme page.
