Health Education England and the College of Paramedics worked in partnership to develop an Urgent Care for Paramedics – Injuries module, as part of the Paramedics elearning programme. The module includes 10 elearning sessions to support paramedics in dealing with a range of injuries.

Elearning sessions include, but are not limited to:

• Ankle Injuries: aims to provide the underlying theory and assessment techniques to carry out these assessments effectively
• Knee Injuries: aims to give the pre-hospital clinician a greater understanding of knee injuries and red flags which may indicate a serious injury requiring further assessment and treatment
• Elbow Injuries: aims to provide the underlying theory and techniques to carry out these assessments effectively
• Minor Head Injury: aims to develop a foundational underpinning knowledge surrounding history taking, physical assessment and management of patients presenting with minor head injuries in the out-of-hospital environment
• Minor Neck Injury: This session is designed to equip paramedics with the knowledge and theory to safely manage minor neck trauma at the scene of a minor road traffic accident (RTC). There will also be an emphasis on good safety netting if the patient is safe to discharge

Each interactive session can be accessed on a variety of mobile devices and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Health Education England worked in partnership with the College of Paramedics to develop 2 new sessions in the Long Term Conditions for Paramedics module. The module has been developed to support paramedics knowledge and skills in treating and managing long term conditions.

The new sessions are Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Heart Failure.

• Heart Failure
• Living with Stroke
• Why Falls and Frailty Matter

This CPD module will be useful for experienced paramedics, students or assistant practitioners. The interactive, online sessions can be accessed on a variety of mobile devices and take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

During the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, paramedics and others may find the modules useful when providing urgent care in a range of different settings. The sessions may be useful for experienced paramedics, students or assistant practitioners, and healthcare professionals working in primary, urgent and unscheduled care.

The urgent care for paramedics – illness modules include:

• acute red eye
• adult rashes
• back pain
• cellulitis
• community acquired pneumonia
• constipation
• dizziness
• headaches
• sore throat
• urinary tract infection

Within each module, interactive sessions can be accessed on a variety of mobile devices and last approximately 20 minutes.

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) worked with the College of Paramedics to develop ten bite-sized sessions to develop paramedics’ knowledge of childbirth, maternal emergencies and care of newborn babies.

Written and edited by paramedic-midwife, Aimee Yarrington, each session in the maternity and newborn care for paramedics’ module was designed to build confidence and competence in experienced paramedics, students and assistant practitioners when caring for mother and baby in a wide range of scenarios such as normal birth, breech birth, peripartum haemorrhage and newborn life support.

The module covers the following topics:

• Ante-partum haemorrhage
• Birth
• Breech birth
• Care of the newborn
• Cord prolapse
• Maternal resuscitation
• Newborn life support
• Post-partum haemorrhage
• Pregnancy induced hypertension and pre-eclampsia
• Shoulder dystocia

Each interactive session can be accessed on a variety of mobile devices and lasts approximately 20 minutes.

As we approach Guy Fawkes Day, otherwise known as Bonfire Night on Thursday 5 November, paramedics and ambulance services staff may be interested in the management of burns module, part of the paramedics elearning programme.

Written by paramedic Harriet Ashman and edited by burn specialist nurse Krissie Stiles for the College of Paramedics, this elearning is aimed at all emergency care workers dealing with burn injuries in a prehospital setting.

For background information, there is also a Paramedic Insight podcast available on all major platforms in which Harriet discusses the topic with College of Paramedics CPD Lead Gary Strong.

What can I expect from the elearning?
Developed by Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) and the College of Paramedics, the management of burns module is comprised of interactive learning experiences that are accessible on different mobile devices.

Each session within the module takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. By completing the module, you will achieve greater understanding of the pathophysiology, assessment and immediate management of burn injuries and contribute to your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Comprised of interactive learning experiences that are accessible on different mobile devices, each session has been created to support the needs of paramedics during the ongoing pandemic.

Supporting paramedic practice during COVID-19

Created by experienced paramedic elearning authors for the College of Paramedics, this elearning is aimed at paramedics and those involved in emergency response during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.  The module consists of five sessions of varied lengths which learners are able to select individually, or complete as an entire module.

The new sessions include:

• The assessment and management of COVID-19 patients for paramedics
• Paramedic wellbeing during a pandemic
• Mechanical ventilators used in prehospital care
• Paramedic use of PPE
